As one would know from both he movie, but as I know more commonly from the book this a true story about ho one man stood up against the nfl. Concussion by Jeanne Marie Laskas is broken up into three parts. Three parts of the protagonist Bennet Omalu. One being his you in Nigeria, and how he climbed up the international ladder to America, which he quotes “America is the land of God.” It his desire to travel and learn more that drives him to where he wants to be. The second part is when he finishes his education has set himself a career, and stumbles on the highlight and climax of his life. Through an autopsy of Mike Webster’s brain, he stumbles upon a newly discovered brain disease that football players get from heavy hits to the head. Thirdly, …show more content…
However, to get into the depth of lesson learned, it was all to inspire the little guy in the crowd. Concussion by Jeanne Marie Laskas, was a story of an underdog. An underdog who had to stand his ground against a whole corporation. A corporation that owned a day of the week. Not only that, Bennet Omalu’s credit was sometimes taken by others, and people didn’t see him as the discoverer of CTE. The message the author was trying to convey, was to always stand your ground against a person or thing, no matter the size. Secondly, it doesn’t matter if you get the credit for the good you do, it only matters if others benefit from it. The intended audience for this novel, are people who want to hear a story of strong man not in strength but in mind. It is intended for people who want to admire one mans humility and courage to step up against more than ten thousand …show more content…
She has exposed Bennet Omalu’s story, and massively butter coated Omalu’s morals. From this story I learned that credit received is not important. Its how important your deed to humanity is. However, if the authors goal was to spread Bennet Omalu’s story, then one would say that she achieved more than that. After all, her novel became a Columbia Pictures Hit. Through out the novel I was introduced to some original suggestions or possibilities as I read the book. As I read the book I saw many people take credit for Dr. Omalu’s research and work. I realized that if these people took credit for the CTE discovery than how come no one else thinks that the great people in history are really the ones who do their extraordinary findings. It got me thinking, was Thomas Edison really the one who built the first light bulb. Or could it have been one of the many different types of people in his team behind him. The non-convincing part of this book, is people in this story are so racist and prejudice towards African Americans, even though this is only the mid 2000’s. It might have something to do with the environment of Pittsburgh compared to California. However, at such a time, how to lawyers and real-estate agents still think it was okay to be prejudice during 2006. Nothing really was left out, except the evidence of rain trauma and the current events of brain disease in the current players of
While examining his brain, they found the first case of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in a football player (Ezell). Dr. Omalu continued into the brains of football players. He diagnost another player with CTE. After that, two other doctors connect concussions to dementia. Dr. Bailes and Dr. Guskiewicz wrote, “that the onset of dementia-related syndromes may be initiated by repetitive cerebral concussions in professional football players” (Ezell). This was the first major finding connecting football to brain injuries.
While many of these films have shown the different aspects of sports, not many of these films have really touched upon the negative effects of contact sports (Landesman, 2015). Based on the aforementioned research conducted by Dr. Omalu in 2005, the 2015 film Concussion highlights the prevalence of CTE in contact sport athletes, particularly football players (Landesman, 2015). In this film, Dr. Bennet Omalu, who is played by Will Smith, examines the brain of former NFL player Mike Webster after he was reported to be displaying erratic behavior. From the post-mortem examination of Webster’s brain, Dr. Omalu finds that he presented with a pathology that was similar to that of CTE (Landesman, 2015). Later on in the film, Dr. Omalu examines the brains of two more football players who displayed cognitive and emotional issues as well prior to their deaths. Omalu then concludes that all of the players had CTE, and the publication of his results creates uproar with the NFL (Landesman,
Concussion revolves around Dr. Bennet Omalu and the research that established Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Omalu is a forensic neuropathologist from Nigeria who came to America to chase dreams as a doctor and researcher. Omalu’s discovery began in the brain of Mike Webster, a National Football
Concussions occur daily in a life of an athlete. This can change their lives forever if they have one that is severe. They might get lucky if its minor and they can go back to playing. Concussions are very dangerous in an athletic world, because they can affect their lives even after they retire from playing that sport. These concussions can start off at any age, but the huge problem people are having is pro sports. NFL being one the biggest leagues to have these problems. There are many debates about whether the NFL are being careful enough and understanding how bad these concussions are. There are some people who are trying to help this problem become known to all. They are trying to help fix this situation. There are ways to fixing this
The epidemic of CTE became evident to the public after Mike Webster, the former Pittsburgh Steelers’s player, sued the NFL claiming his football career destroyed his brain. Four years later, in 2002, Webster died suddenly and he became Patient Zero, after Dr. Omalu performed the autopsy that found CTE. Dr. Bennet Omalu and Dr. Ann McKee made headway with research and found that CTE forms from poisonous protein build up in the brain and causes victims to feel their own livelihood slowly deteriorate (League of Denial). The history of CTE explains that it does not just appear over one jarring occurrence. This protein in the brain tissue builds up after multiple head injuries, also described as a concussion. When football players make a tackle and their bodies collide the brain rattles around in its protecting barrier, the skull. Concussions are very tough to detect because a typical MRI cannot pick up the tearing in the microscopic tissue. Mild traumatic brain injuries show no signs of physical damage to the naked eye. The only factor medical examiners can base their prognosis off of is the state of the athlete presented to them. After a hit the brain deforms, and if shaken hard enough parts of neurons can stretch and even tear. When torn, molecules begin to leak in the brain containing several proteins including tau. With concussion after concussion, the axons in the brain wear down due to excess calcium and a build up of tau forms
One hard hit to a NFL player’s head can destroy their life. Concussions are a major problem that the NFL has been dealing with for a very long time. As a huge football fan, I have a special interest with this issue. When concussions were first identified as a problem, they were extremely down played. People thought that injuries to knees and backs were much worse than a concussion. What they did not know was that a concussion is lethal and can cause serious consequences. After this was discovered, the NFL started to take steps to improve the safety of players, but for some, it was far too late. Concussions that NFL players receive are negatively impacting their lives after their career, due to Chronic
Same as Laskas, “Concussion” movie acquits Bennet’s name. Nominated to Golden Globe awards, Will Smith played Bennet. imitating Bennet’s thick accent, Smith was outstanding. The most interesting part in the movie where it even defeats the book was the definition of the CTE and how it clots from the unremitting storm of sub-concussive blows using the head as a weapon: “Triggered a cascading series of neurological events, which unleashed a killer protein upon Webster’s brain, the tangles invading and strangling his mind from the inside out. Like pouring
There is still misunderstood information everywhere about concussions, but this sheds some light on the
On opening day, a lot of people watched the movie "Concussion," and it changed the way they saw the football forever. The way that concussions have been viewed by fans in the past was that it was not a big deal. With the release of this movie, people may soon adopt a more conservative approach to management with how medical professionals manage players who suffered a brain injury. That might sound like a bad thing, but extra caution could help to save players and their families a lot of heartache down the road.
In the movie, Concussion, Dr. Bennett Omalu persevered through both professional and personal challenges and was ultimately vindicated. A lot of former NFL players went insane when something bothered inside their heads and they died so Dr. Omalu found neurological deterioration when he observed the dead players’ brains for an autopsy. Dr. Omalu worked as a forensic pathologist and he cut the bodies to take the things out of it. During the investigation, Dr. Omalu researched about neurological deterioration and he met the medical colleagues about the situations from the dead NFL players. Dr. Omalu was very religious and he used his faith for professional work. Also he received the critics from NFL because the committee didn’t support Dr. Omalu’s
In the video, Big Hits, Broken Dreams, the topic of concussions in football especially in high school football is brought up. An important point that is brought up is the protocol high school's should take when one of their players experiences brain trauma. The video suggests different ways to keep the player safe and prevent future concussions on the field.
Clyde was born and raised in Mississippi under the Jim Crow Laws. His family owned a farm, but was forced into sharecropping after authorities claimed the family owed a ridiculous sum of money in taxes. The story touches on his life in Mississippi and the struggles he endured as an African American; most of the story deals with Ross’s later life in Chicago. Ross moved to North Lawndale hoping for a better life, but was soon persuaded otherwise after being ripped off on his home. The practice mentioned - contracts where if one payment was missed the property along with the down payment would be returned to the seller - was a common thing targeted at African Americans, as it was easy money for the seller. This caused properties to be sold numerous times, after demanding outrageous payments from the buyers. This nearly happened to Ross, after being completely cheated by paying nearly double the rate of the previous owner. Another thing that occurred throughout neighborhoods were sudden drops in house value. This was directly caused by houses being bought by black people in a predominately white area. One house could vastly affect the surrounding property prices, easily dropping a couple thousand. When one man was asked about his African American neighbor he said, “he’s probably a nice guy, but every time I look at him I see $2,000 drop

The past of this land is what inspires the black community of Marshall to fight for their rights and to protect their history.
Concussion, the biographical sports drama, is a movie directed by Peter Landesman. It is based on a true story of a Nigerian doctor named Dr. Bennet Omalu who is played by Will Smith. Finding his way into America as a surgeon, he encountered and diagnosed a former American Football player after their death. Dr. Bennet has to faced against a billion dollar organization, the national Football League, in order to justify his researches and enforce it to be publicity. The movie shows hardship and unfairness of the football company to Dr. Bennet Omalu. This movie have three particular points that audience should consider and notice. Director, Peter Landesman, was able to created the movie in a realistic and reliable way to the scenes. Though the movie was realistic, certain parts of the movie was out of context and confusing. Especially the actor expressions and feelings toward each other, they did not successfully execute properly to make it believable. It is an amazing and educated two hours movie, yet it felt as if there are missing scenes in the movie.
