Why Is It Important To Have A College Education

In the last decade, students and parents alike have begun to question the effectiveness of receiving a college education. Stories of students graduating college with outstanding student loans, being unable to find a job, or feeling overqualified for a position continually increase. In the same manner, the number of students apprehensive about refraining from entering the workforce for an additional four years while simultaneously spending thousands of dollars for an education that in the end may not assure them a job with an adequate income, increases. The issue then is to determine whether or not the cost of college is worth the outcome.

College allows for the creation of social networks that can be utilized to assist in finding jobs and maintaining a healthy state of mind. A strong connection to a social environment provides breathing room when issues arise. In addition to a collection of associates, it provides a leg up on someone with less education. A degree within a certain field bolsters the chance of finding a job specifically related to said field which gives plenty of reason to stick to the course and work it out. Statistics show that graduates from college have an increased average hourly wage from the jobs that they do obtain which means that making money is substantially easier for those with a degree. In 2013 the graduate made 98% more an hour than those who had not had a form of college experience. Many parents pressure their children to attend college, but is getting a college education actually necessary? You finally made it; your last year of high school. You’re anxious and ready to get out in the world and make something for yourself. But how do you do that? The major debate over getting a college education is worth it began many ages ago. With 20.2 million US college students in 2015 and average student debt at over $28,000 dollars, the debate continues today. People who argue that getting a college education is worth receiving will understand that college graduates have higher employment rates, higher salaries, and a larger work benefits than high school graduates. They say college graduates also have better interpersonal skills, live longer, have healthier children, and have proven their ability to achieve a major milestone. Now on the other hand, others who argue that college isnt worth it will give the excuse that the debt from college loans is too high and slows the graduates from saving for retirement, buying a house, or getting married. They say many successful people never graduated from college and that many jobs, especially trades jobs, do not really need college degrees, but really, going to college is setting you up for success.

While every single person is entitled to an education, not everyone feels that an education is worth having the first place. And it’s terribly unfortunate notion. This may be the case because there is a large portion of people who are unknowing of the benefits and advantages of having an education, or, more specifically, a college degree from a four-year, accredited college or university. Whatever their reasoning may be, this unfortunate group doesn’t understand or know that having an education – a college degree – is the key to living a fulfilling, financially independent life. Not only does having an education generally earn people more money than someone without one, it allows a person to have freedom in choosing their career. A college degree also gives them job security, because they fall back on their education for employment. In turn, having a college degree means having a high quality of life.

According to a George Mason website, 67 percent of students who attend graduated within four years. This is an excellent percentage rate, which is reassuring to me because I intend on transferring there when I am finished with Thomas Nelson. Because a college education is important, I will become successful by listening to expert opinion, by developing effective strategies, and also by overcoming my challenges.

Imagine bouncing from interview to interview with no success, constantly being told that you were lacking because you had not received a college education. Would you regret not going to college? As students prepare to graduate high school and approach the time for college, some may consider skipping college because they are in such a hurry to chase their dreams, or earn money as soon as possible. My knowledge about college is obtained from two of my siblings who are still attending a university and my remaining family members who have already graduated college. Lora Georgieva, a certified college planner, wrote that, “more than 2.3 million people per year graduate college.” Despite college feeling like a waste of time and money, a college education should be valued because it raises more benefits from jobs, enforces a healthier lifestyle, and supplies students with golden opportunities.

I feel it is important to encourage our youth to enroll in college at a minimum obtain a bachelor's degree and understand the career benefits of a college education. A well-rounded core curriculum, at a higher learning institution, is a luxury for some. Yet, the financial burdens of today will not outlast the career and financial opportunities that a college degree will secure for a stable future. Individuals can have a greater advantage if they utilize the free tuition act, apply for financial aid, state and local grants, scholarships, and work-study programs. However, more and more people are beginning to question the true need, value, and benefits of a college degree. With the internet readily available to all, does one really need to sit in a classroom for the next four years when you can just ask google? Should having job and family stability with health care benefits be so far-fetched that people are willing to sacrifice them for minimum wage jobs in service industries. Albert Einstein stated that “education is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think.” We as individuals should re-think the endless career opportunities that are associated with higher learning.

Ever since we are children we are taught that we have to be successful in life whether it is financially or educationally. Coming from an immigrant family, my parents have always valued being given the opportunity to have an education since in many countries and families it is not possible. I constantly hear endless conversations on why my family brought me to this country to be able to succeed and thrive and their authoritative words are constant reminder that it is worth it. A college student with a college degree is more likely to earn a lot more wage than that of an individual without one. And that is what should be expected attending college for however many plus years and not getting paid is not something that should happen but there could be some exceptions to this. Since the 1970s like stated in the article “Do the benefits of college outweigh the costs?” it has been shown that “the benefits of both a bachelor’s degree and an associate’s degree still tends to outweigh the costs, with both degrees earning a return of about 15 percent’s over the past two decades”. Which means that students have been earning more than what they had initially spent on their college tuition. Having a college education is something that our parents have forever pushed on us, but as you grow older you realize how important it is to have one. Being a high school and a college students at once, I have realized that college is stressful and expensive

In the United States today, it seems that attending college is almost required for you to be successful in the future. Starting in elementary school, students are told that they need a college degree to obtain any kind of meaningful employment. This system seems flawed because other countries offer alternatives to college degrees that have proved successful. The United States should explore other means to obtaining a successful career in the future.

Foremost, a college education can open many doors in a person's search for a career. This means that a college graduate would be more likely to be offered employment than a person who didn't attend college or did not attain a degree. The unemployment rate for a person with less than a high school diploma is more than three times that of a person with a college degree (U.S. Department of Labor). The cost of not going to college is rising, so much so that nine out of ten graduates are raving about the benefits they are reaping from the investment. Attending College will also assist in preparing a person for a career in a particular field. In a vast majority of highly specialized jobs, if one does not have a college degree, there is little to zero possibility of securing a career in that chosen field. College will give a person the tools to succeed in the field of their choice. These tools would not be available to most people who do not attend college.

Going to college and getting a degree does not necessarily guarantee that an individual is going to get a job right after graduation. It is hard out there for recent graduates to find a good job since there is so much competition due to the increasing accessibility of a college education. Even if they do get a job, it is not usually not in what they got their degree for. They have to find some sort of job to pay off all the debt that their college education has given to them.
