The novel Beloved by Toni Morrison is set in1873 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sethe, the protagonist and previous slave who was born in the south and has never knew her mother. At the age of thirteen, she was auctioned off to the Garners. There were many other slaves, but mostly men such as; Paul F, Paul D, Sixo, Paul A, and Halle. Sethe ends up choosing Halle to marry and together they have two sons, Howard and Buglar, as well as a baby girl whose name we never encounter. When Sethe leaves Sweet Home, she is pregnant with her fourth child. Eventually, Seth ends up living with her eighteen-year-old daughter Denver. Beloved and Paul D do not get along with another. Beloved starts to control Paul D by moving him around the house and alluring him against his will. Sethe and Beloved’s relationship grows more intense and private and results in Beloved becoming more devious, and insulting. Sethe is controlled with fulfilling Beloved’s commands because Beloved wants to make her unravel why she murdered her. So, as readers we question is she really a ghost? In addition, Denver leaves for College and Paul D returns to Sethe. The main protagonist of this story is Sethe, but also Denver can be one as well. The antagonist of this story is Beloved and the schoolteacher. Paul D is one of the supporting characters in this story because he reminisce his traumatizing experience in the Sweet home just as Sethe did. In addition, he is Sethe’s lover and you can say that Denver and Beloved are jealous of him. Stamp Paid is another supporting character who is an important figure in the community. Halle is Sethe’s husband and he is very kind and generous. Lastly, after the death of Mr. Garner, the schoolteacher took over the Sweet home. He portrays as a racist, cold dictator. In addition, there is Baby Suggs, Lady Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Garner who are supporting characters.
Sethe, is the main protagonist of the novel. She is fundamental hero who is portrayed as a caring, independent, and honest woman. Sethe's most striking trademark, notwithstanding, is her dedication to her kids. Her main goal is that she is unwilling to give up her kids to the physical, enthusiastic, and otherworldly injury she has continued as a slave, she tries to murder them in a demonstration that is, in her psyche, one of nurturing adoration and
