What makes the NBA (National Basketball Association) and the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) popular among their fan base? The NBA and the WNBA, feature men, as well as women’s professional basketball, therefore drawing the attention of twice as many fans. Each league plays the same sport, but contains a separate set of rules for each which causes different paced games. Both the National Basketball Association and the Women’s Basketball Association help promote each other’s business at games and other events. The two leagues, the NBA and the WNBA, capture the attention of sport lovers worldwide in light of the fact that both involving intense competition and entertainment. Although, the NBA and the WNBA both provide fans …show more content…
This also means that the salary for an NBA or WNBA player, including international ones, will continue to rise. In addition, the Women’s National Basketball Association, although it only has twelve teams, it had 29 international players in 2003. At this point in time I believe the amount of international players would have increased in numbers, and contain athletes representing multiple different countries. The number of International players should continue to increase and help the National Basketball Association and the Women’s National Basketball Association fan base broaden even farther throughout the world. The men and women’s leagues would not be the same without international athletes. Overall, both leagues are compromised from a large number of international athletes that contribute to the highly esteemed leagues athletic excellence that is recognized all throughout the world. Both the National Basketball Association and the Women’s National Basketball Association are well respected organizations that young viewers look up to, which is why both leagues hold camps and events to interact with the young fans. The Women’s National Basketball Association, for example, has multiple teams that host camps for teens interested in playing basketball. As a matter of fact, the New York Liberty’s camp is held in Tarrytown, New York. The main
It too years in the making, but finally we were able to bring our female basketball players back to the United States. The season was played in the summer. The summertime schedule immediately opens the doors for a new type of basketball fan. WNBA games are warmer; there are no stuffy men straight from their business meetings filling up the Madison Square Garden seats. No high profile attendees awaiting their picture on the big screen above center court. Above all the tickets are much less than a regular season New York Knicks game. The low-ticket prices brought in rowdier more enthusiastic fans. There were families sitting courtside instead of the usual businessmen and their impressionable clients - and of course Spike Lee. The fans were there because they loved basketball, not because they wanted to see Alan Houston or some other player paid millions to run up and down the court. There was a more genuine glow about the fans. A glow that only the people in nosebleed seats have at the New York Knick games. There were fathers with their daughters both wearing
Most of our youth playing AAU basketball have the dream or drive of playing at the next level. The next level could be college or professional; the idea is that playing in more tournaments will increase your exposure to scouts. European and players born outside of the U.S. have been a steady addition to professional basketball in the US. San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich prefers the European player because they are, "fundamentally harder working than most American kids (Wickersham, 2013)." The image below shows the Spurs championship roster from 2014 and the balance of European to American players. The Spurs have won 5 NBA championships since 1999, which is tied with the Los Angeles Lakers over the same period for most in basketball.
The WNBA deserves the same attention and respect equal to the NBA due to its equal entertainment value, competitiveness, and their rights to
The Women’s National Basketball Association, more commonly known as the WNBA, is a professional basketball league consisting of 12 teams spanning across the United States. The league was founded in 1996 but didn’t officially kick off until 1997. While it’s not the first major women’s professional basketball league in the United States, the WNBA is the only league that has received full backing from the National Basketball Association, more commonly, the NBA. Now in its 20th season under the direction of league president Lisa Borders, the regular season is played from June to September with the playoffs spanning through the remainder of September into the middle of October. Although they have the full backing from the NBA, there are still a few discrepancies between the two leagues. Even though WNBA games are not as exciting as NBA games, the players of the WNBA deserve equal pay because the team mindset makes the game more challenging, players continue to show their hard work in the offseason by playing overseas, and they inspire young girls by providing for charities as a result of their work.
We are going to talk about the differences about the National Basketball Association and the Woman National Basketball Association. Because right now the popularity on the WNBA is known than the NBA, mainly because of the excitement of the NBA brings to the fans is a lot more entertaining than the WNBA, obviously because in the NBA have more money to pay their players and to have nice venue. An interview on ESPN said that an NBA game draws over double the attendance of a WNBA game, which means that there will be more ticket sales as well as merchandise sales and endorsements. This means that owners of WNBA teams are making much less money
The NBA received an A+ for racial hiring practices and a B+ for gender hiring practices with scores of 97.4 points (up from 96.4) and 88 points (up from 86.5), respectively. The overall grade was an A with 92.7 points, up from 90.9 in the 2014 race and gender report card (NBA, 2014). Using empirical evidence one would suggest that the National Basketball Association is not a diverse sport, and is dominated by African American Diversity in basketball. Well NBA is more diverse then you think, and the culture inspires that diversity. The NBA’s career opportunity’s Diversity & Inclusion statement mentions that “Basketball is a sport that transcends culture, race, language, gender and socio-economic levels, and one in which anyone, anywhere can learn, enjoy and play” (NBA, 2016). The statement is inclusive to all whether you want to watch, work, or play the game. The inclusive work culture results in productivity and recruiting a diverse workplace. Self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behavior. The power in Demography: Women 's social constructions of gender identity at work (Ely, 1995) also exhibit that as the percent of women in organization increases, women will be better off in the inclusion organization. This same study can be applied to other minority groups in an organization. The revenue of the NBA for the
It is important for the athletic directors and other authoritative figures in men’s basketball to strive for a common goal and establish a better sense balance among those in the basketball environment by changing the contradicting expectations and policies of the NCAA. Some say basketball players have been taken advantage of for far too long and ask “how much longer are universities willing to wait [the] before students see them as a threat and an aid to the issue rather than a source of education and athletic support”? Neglecting the issue has only postponed its significance to emerge as more relevant. By helping address this issue with urgency will allow the players to feel acknowledged and help create a solution for everyone’s benefit to the issue at
Former Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA), David Stern built the foundation for the WNBA. Stern’s belief in creating a strong women’s league connected to the NBA, has made a tremendous difference in the sports world. The WNBA has enabled women to continue living their dream of playing high-level, competitive basketball in the United States. Upon opening, the WNBA sparked lots of excitement in 1996. Initially, the
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world. Obviously the NBA and college basketball are the most known, but there are many other paths. International basketball is spreading more and more. AAU is an organization that gives exposure to high schoolers to try to receive a college scholarship. In addition, streetball is another way for hopeful hoppers playing their dream. The game of basketball has lots of levels overseas, AAU, and streetball are a few of them.
Professional sports have been a passing time in our generation and more importantly a business. Over the years sports have gained millions of viewers and fans. Sports arenas and stadiums seats have been sold as a result millions of dollars have been made through professional sports. Before social media and mass media shined light to life as a professional athlete, we were unaware of exactly what went on behind the curtains between the athletes and the organization that they played for. Despite the fact that athletes can earn a lot of money at the highest level, they also experience bad work conditions, dissatisfied with how they are treated, unreasonable pay and benefits, and the organization not being interested in their well being.
WNBA attendance and NBA attendance vary significantly. Is this variation a result of women’s professional sports not having a large fan base, differing marketing strategies used by the WNBA and the NBA, less attention to women’s professional sports by the media and sports broadcasting networks, or a combination of all three of these issues? Through the use of statistical data, one can determine that attendance levels are favorable to the NBA as opposed to the WNBA. In an attempt to answer this question, I examine marketing strategies such as digital marketing used by both the NBA and WNBA and the differences in who their target audience is when applying their marketing strategies. Additionally, I compare and contrast data related to the amount of time each of these organizations receives on popular sports broadcasting networks. In an interview with Chris Forrest who previously held a marketing position for the Lakers and the Sparks, we examine the marketing differences and their effects on turnout between the two teams.
In 1871, Dr. James Naismith invented basketball as an activity for his male students at a YMCA school in Massachusetts. A year later, Senda Berenson who is a physical education teacher organized the first women basketball team at Smith College. The rules of the sport for men were more complex than those of the women. It was adapted to women and later recognized as netball. The first time that female athletes were given a chance to play a full court basketball game was in the year 1971 because they were considered vigorous enough to perform the activity. A year after the first full court women’s basketball game, President Nixon signed Title IX of Educational Amendment (US Sports Academy, 2008). Title IX states that no person should be prohibited from activities and discriminated for their sexual category. There is also a Philippine act similar to this, which is the republic act no. 9710 that refers to the “magna carta of women.” This paper intends to discuss why women deserve equal
The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded on June 6, 1949 in New York City and has exploded today to become one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world, next to the National Football League(NFL). There are a total of 30 teams in the NBA, each worth about $1.25 billion, making the whole league worth about $37.5 billion. The mastermind behind the NBA’s huge profits are the white collared team owners who watch over the respected team franchises for years. In the past, NBA team owners have been caught up in scandals that have created stereotypes and misconseptions among fans that paint the owners as money hungry individuals who give no respect for their blue collared players in the league. The NBA cutting ties
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has transformed over the many of years as an organization and a brand, into a multibillion-dollar business that draws thousands and thousands of fans to each and every game. Many contributing factors have made the NBA what it is today, but the main cause of this gain in interest is the ultimate rivalry between two remarkable players, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Larry “the Legend” Bird. The battling rivalry amongst these individuals is comparable to the feud of Coca Cola and Pepsi, or, Star Wars and Star Trek. During the era of modern television, and the still and ever present racial bigotry, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird helped redefine the game of basketball and popularity of the NBA with their
The NBA and WNBA give the equal opportunity of playing professional basketball to both men and women, but the ages at which they are allowed to start their career differ. These age eligibility rules are believed by some to give an unequal opportunity to female basketball players. In the article, “Hoop Dreams Deferred: The WNBA, The NBA, And The Long-Standing Gender Inequality At The Game’s Highest Level”, N. Jeremi Duru discusses the age eligibility rules for the NBA and WNBA. Topics included are how they are different, how the difference is unfair to females, and how the NBA can be held responsible for the inequality to women. As a professor of law, Duru has a professional approach to the topic with a lengthy article that has claims backed by laws and has a legal case feel.
