Basketball In the 1920’s the World War 1 was occurring, and people needed activities to keep them on the positive side. “The invention of basketball wasn’t an accident. It was a development to meet a need.” -James Naismith. Basketball was just the right sport. It was a recent invention in 1891, and in the now it has become a college and professional sport. Many professionals didn’t go to college and didn't even compete in high school. That means that the men who went to play professional were not very experienced, so it was pretty rough. They were still the real pioneers of pro basketball. They made sure that they kept the score pretty close, so that way the fans would come back to see a interesting game. The games are largely disorganized, but it brought crowds of people to the cages or arenas. Basketball was a second tier sport, which meant that it would only be watched if football and hockey weren't on. Many people don’t see the game as an fun game to watch quite yet. Another reason for the low attendance, was tickets were one to two dollars per game, so many people could not afford to attend a game. Do you know how to play? This is what basketball looks like right now. There are six to nine players on each side of the court and their goal is to put the basketball inside the brown bucket more times than their opponent. There is no shoulding, tripping, striking, and talking in any way. You heard that right, there is no talking allowed between players, and they were only allowed to use signs with their hands. Throwing underhand, shot put, or throwing it with your back to the basketball counted as a point. There was no running with the ball allowed in this sport, and instead he/she shall dribble with one or two hands. Do you know what the “cages” are? It is a wired cage, that is played inside by the players. The goal of the cage is to protect the players, and make the game faster and keep the ball in play. This may seem a little complicated for the first timers, but this invention may be the most unique game around. Many people wondered if this game would ever be a real thing, but it turned out being a minor league hit in many arenas, gyms, and armories. It gave a chance for people to play what
Basketball is a sport that was created for a gym class and evolved into a worldwide sensation . Basketball was created in 1891 by a man named James Naismith. He originally created the game for his gym class because, it was unbearable outside for any other sports , and the game originally was nonphysical and only had 13 rules.
Because it was so hard to get the ball through the hoops, there were other objects as well. Players could hit one of the six markers along the sides of the court. Or, they would be given points for other skillful plays. Fouls were also given if the players couldn't get the ball across the center line, or if they touched the ball with the wrong part of the body, such as the hand or calf
Have you ever wondered how basketball was created? Have you ever questioned how basketball has evolved into becoming one of the most popular sports in the world? Basketball evolved from a simple sport played in one gym to now being more complex and played in gyms all over the world. It was Dr. James Naismith who first created the basics of basketball. When he first made the game, no one could have imagined the games success and spread throughout the entire world.
James Naismith game of basketball was originally created for a YMCA class of white males for a form of indoor exercise during the winter months. The game has since evolved drastically from its humble beginnings with a peach basket and soccer ball to metal rims with chained nets in every urban area. A huge reason for this transformation is because of its adoption by African American culture. African American stars have and continue to dominate this form of art and have made basketball a prevailing part of African American culture. Basketball today has become
The National Basketball Association was created in 1946. It is no surprise that it has gone through some changes throughout the years, although they're only a few bad changes, there's a significant amount if good changes. In the early years of the NBA , they only did the simple stuff, and although the evolution of the NBA has been entertaining, the players are becoming fancy by changing up the game.
The gym was clustered with so many people playing basketball separately, just shooting and running around. It looked like if all the animals got out of their cages at a zoo and put in a
Basketball (or Basket Ball –then two words) was invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1981. He was an instructor at Christian Workers in Springfield Massachusetts. On March 11, 1892 students and workers at the school played the first public game of basket ball. On March 22, 1983 Smith College in Massachusetts becomes the first women’s school to play basket ball. Men are not allowed to watch the games.
As the game became more popular, there were several early important changes to the original game. Wooden backboards were added in 1896. As mentioned before, the game grew more popular and what was originally a sport created for exercise became a source of entertainment and spectators. The spectators would reach over the balcony and disturb player’s shots so backboards were added. They eventually changed to clear glass so people seated behind the basket could see. The peach basket was eliminated next and replaced with iron hoops. Nets were added to the hoops so the referee could see the ball going through the hoop. Figure 3 lists many of the major rules and changes that made basketball what is
If while you were watching the NBA and ever asked yourself how the sport and all it is about became what it is today, here are a few things that could help answer those questions.
During the observation process what surprised me the most was that there was a pretty reasonable age gap among the people that were playing. Before I start observing I would have assumed that people of the same age group would be playing among their age group. The young guys would play with others around their age group for the mere reason that they can relate to each other since there is more in common with each other than with someone that is a lot older. Another thing was that there was very few if any girls play basketball. The environment that I observed is one that I knew well or at least I believed so since it’s an area that I routinely see. Taking the time to see the environment closely rather than just a glance really opens you to
Many colleges began forming their teams between 1893 and 1895, and with such rapid growth, the game became very popular in Canada and select countries. (Basketball
Imagine, that in 1896, the first ever professional basketball is being played on the third floor of Masonic Temple Hall in New Jersey, that was held in a banquet hall, which was enclosed with sharp and dangerous chicken wire that you could easily be cut with. The game of basketball, as you can tell, has developed a great margin over time. As far as the ball and net itself, to the rules and way the game is played, there were many different causes for changes that had positive effects, as well as some that may have had some negative effects.
The invention that affects my life is basketball, because every time I play basketball I feel normal and not like some broke kid who doesn’t have a life. Basketball is what my life is all about and if I did not have basketball, then I would be some kid with nothing else to do but sit on the couch and not get a job and be homeless for the rest of my life. When I play basketball it gives me hope that I will be able to someday get away from poverty and be able to say that I had a good life. Basketball is what is going to change my life forever, and then I’ll be able to move my family out of our small house into a bigger one. Basketball is my ticket out, all I have to do is take the opportunity that god has given me. Before I played basketball
I recently learnt more about basketball. Apparently, it was invented by a Canadian for the YMCA in order to motivate teenagers and young adult's in to healthy living, team work, and passion. It was too cold in Massachusetts for a lot of outdoor sports and the intent was to give the young men an indoor sport. It seems to me then that you got the exact lessons that James Naismith, the original inventor, intended. Personally, I support sports because of these lessons and the added element of fun.
Did you know basketball has been around for almost 85 years? Many people from all around the world play basketball. It is played with a ball from a variety of sizes and with a hoop from many different heights. The history of basketball has evolved over the years from the first game ever played making improvements to the rules along with how leagues are formed to todays games.
