Most theories explain why people act in certain ways and explains why a person in a group may act different than someone that is alone. Research questions are formulated in a study to inquire about variables, both independent and dependent variables, and the relationship between them. Research questions are categorized into two, that is, qualitative and quantitative research questions. Qualitative questions are used in qualitative research like case studies, surveys and action research where the approach is non-numerical and analyses special phenomena that occur in nature. Quantitative research on the other hand is more of a systematic approach with measurable numerical quantities that go through analysis to prove a hypothesis. A questionnaire is a list of a research or survey questions asked to respondents, and designed to extract quantitative date. Questionnaires are easily distributed to the community and can be completed and collected on the spot or be emailed or posted back to the researcher. Self completed questionnaires are the most common survey as they are cheap and can be passed to a lot of people. Some sociologists tend not to use questionnaires because of their low response rate and lack of validity. Also, some people may give false information so some researchers like to stick to interviews and experiments for increased accuracy. I will explore why sociologists shy away from using questionnaires.

Sociologists observe the world to find a problem or an interesting pattern, then begin to study their findings. They use research methods to design a study, such as a detailed, scientific method for piloting research and obtaining data, or study an outline. A Cleveland clinic cardiologist named Steven E. Nissen gave one of the earliest warnings about the drug. Scientists estimated 83,000 heart attacks and deaths in their research. The principles of the sociological scientific method include professional competence, integrity, professional and scientific responsibility, respect for people’s dignity, and diversity, and social responsibility. Sociologists have the ability to modify the structures of a society based on their research alone, meaning that sociologists have an immense amount of power. As a sociologist, adhering to the principles of the sociological scientific method is important in order for the the immense amount of power that sociologists have to stay in control. Following the principles of the sociological scientific method does not allow the sociologists to abuse their power within a society.

Sociologists use many different designs and methods to study society and social behavior. Most sociological research involves ethnography, or “field work” designed to depict the characteristics of a population as fully as possible.

There is no doubt that most of social researches are always really in a need of using theory, leading to a requirement on using approach methods rationally. There have three types of research approaches including deduction, induction and abduction.
