Art Compare Contrast Essay

Greek culture is the source from which many of the characteristic elements of Western culture derive. Their explorations and innovations in art have both fascinated and inspired other civilizations for centuries. For this assignment I chose two Greek sculptures viewed at the Getty Museum. The first is Kouros circa 530 B.C. made of Dolomitic marble from Thasos and is approximately 200 cm (80 in) in height. The second is Cult Statue of a Goddess, (most likely Aphrodite) South Italy, 425 - 400 B.C. made of Limestone and marble. It stands at a height of 220 cm (86 5/8 in). There is some dispute to the authenticity of the Getty Kouros

Art is an incredible medium when used to its fullest potential. What I mean by that is; it has the capabilities to surround the viewer with its imagery and play with the emotions. Paintings are particulary effective in doing this through the use of color tones and ‘temperature’. For example; El Greco used a lot of blue and green throughout his body of work. The outcome is that the subject matter comes off as ghostly and perhaps a little alien. This is in high contrast to Georgia O’Keeffe’s desert paintings, which utilise reds, yellows, and browns to create a ‘warm’ and appealing landscape.

Art is able to transport its viewer through time and connect us as a community. Audiences are able to infer the content and context of the artwork. Art displayed through different mediums and about different topics can share many similarities and draw connections between one another. Exodus, created by Shelby Lechman (2015), uses oil paint on canvas to depict a young boy and father in a train car, leaving their home in Hungary during the time of the Hungarian Revolution (fig.1). Back into the Earth: Creation and the Interpretation of Meaning, created by Tamara Himmelspach (2015) is a series of 11 prints and a physical dress displaying the designer in a jingle dress representing the traditions of the Ojibwa culture

I visited two museums, Bowers Museum of cultural Art in the heart of Southern California and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach for my report unfortunately I only liked the works in MoLAA and will talk about it through out my paper. Art has been an integral part of human society, since the early cavemen days. It has been used for various reasons, for political purposes, entertainment, and religious reasons. One of the most famous early civilization in human history are the Egyptians who created various works of art. The Egyptians also utilized art for various reasons, however they most extensively used art for spiritual and religious purposes. The Egyptians were a polytheistic civilization, they had numerous gods and goddess to worship.

This essay will compare and contrast the work of two sculptors who use the human form as a basis of their artwork. The first sculpture “Apollo and Daphne” by Gian Lorenzo Bernini was created in 1622 and portrays a Romanian story. Where as “Two Women” by Ron Mueck is a hyper realistic sculpture made by an Australian contemporary artist.

Art has many styles, shapes, forms, and meanings. The way people perceive art is very different from one another. Even though some art pieces are very similar, prehistoric art focused on the human species and the human form. The artists had minimal influence which had an effect on their creative process.

Throughout the first art periods there has been very significant changes as new techniques and variations began to develop.The two first art periods I will be describing are Egyptian and Early Archaic.Ancient Egypt began from 3100 BCE to 30 BCE.Some features of ancient egyptian art include Frontal eye, V-shaped torso and Hierarchic scale. The early egyptians had limited color, their sculpture were connected together, and left foot was always in front of the right. The Early Archaic period lasted from 650 to 480 BCE. Some significant features of this period included geometric figures and the popular “Archaic Smile” This period showed a great change by showing emotions and were more detailed than the Early Egyptian styled

Everyone has been created unique and there is no other that is the like anyone else. People think different, dress different and like and dislike certain things. This is similar to the artists of the nineteenth century including Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau and Joseph Mallord William Turner. They are both artists during the nineteenth century and were painted at the same time; however, there is a difference between their styles, their point of view, and the scenery. However there are similarities between the two paintings. The paintings that will be compared and contrasted are “Under the Birches, Evening” and “The Campo Santo, Venice.”

Ancient artists found passion and beauty of nature and the nobility and dignity of man. Egyptian’s and Greek talent that was given to the world that lasted throughout history has shown great influence in the early human civilization era. The two types of art show some differences and similarities in era, characteristics and style.

The form of art has been around for thousands of years. There has been many different types of art form found from the ancient greece times. These time are the earliest times that are recorded and are placed in museums. These early art forms teaches us a little bit about the human race and how they were back in the roman times. There are some painting and sculptures that represents different people from their time lines. These art form can explain how they were back in their times and with the statues you can see how far they were allowed to do.

The study on the African art gave a strong response making the artists to show an interest in many forms of art because it demonstrated emotional and psychological power. The African continent people showed a different and unique culture into their art because of the materials they used to create the masks and sculptures.
