Argument Against Group Work

As a college student, I don’t enjoy group work. I am the student that dominates the group and does almost all of the work, establishing group times to talk about what needs to be done, and making sure that attendance is mandatory

In my opinion, group work is a type of cooperative learning that helps people to accomplish a certain task in a faster and more effective manner. Team working also helps to achieve the tasks that are impossible to finish by one individual. However, if people in a group have a lot of conflicts, group work will not be able to achieve as much as we expected. There are many reasons which lead to dissatisfaction in group work such as individualism as well as conflicts in opinion and time.

Group work is an important part of work. In many jobs, group work is a function that is required. Therefore it’s important to develop the skills and practices at University. In this essay I critically analyse my own experiences against the literature.

Working in a group to achieve a high quality group project can be one of people’s most difficult school experiences. Working in a group is tough because there is often someone who does not pull their own weight. “There are five stages to group development, adjourning, forming, storming, performing, and norming” (John & Wiley pg 166). I believe many students do not like group assignments because for the most part a person or two do not pull their wait leaving the leader doing most of the work. Other problems includes having to deal with various personalities, the work distribution, trying to communicate with each other, feeling vulnerable, and the way everyone gets the same grade because it is a group effort. So the lazy people get the same grade as the people who worked hard.

During my college life on campus in my major, I normally get a lot of group assignment to complete. In my second semester, I have been engaged with some hard working group members who willing to achieve their goals. In this case, all of us were on the same pace to complete the assignment and get it done on time to the best of our ability. In my communication class called editing and film, One of the projects was to film some athletes performing and write an article about the sport. There were five members in my group and we all work together and each individual gets a sign task to do and complete it without an issue. We get one week to perform the task and the follow Monday we would have to present it to the class, we have complete the work on time because we all work hard together as a team to get the job done

Since much of our time is spend in groups, it is helpful to work in groups because it will give an opportunity to improve their human functioning. Group work helps to develop individual skills in communication, relationship building and asserting oneself

Throughout life there are many instances in which an individual has to work in a group to complete a task/project. The importance of group work is to have teamwork with each member of the group. Humans are driven to connect with each other and by working as a group ideas become much more enriched and the ideas or thoughts that each person ‘brings to the table’ each individual is able to add onto that idea or it can trigger one to think of something completely different.

Working in a group was a great way to get to know my classmates. Despite our differences, we worked together and completed the assignment. I like working in a group, but sometimes I would rather do the assignment on my own. Group work has its good and bad effects.

It is important to recognize the attributes of your group mates and work together cohesively. This requires people to work selflessly for their group and volunteer to help anyway they could. I've learned, working in my group, that having a common goal or task is needed to perform well. My group had many miscommunications about building the tower. Although our critical thinking involving the strengths and weaknesses of the task were great we were not good at putting them into action. Likewise some people worked with weren't as creative. They followed the notions of the group and contributed to completing the task. Although my group did not finish the tower we created many ideas but couldn't put them together. When someone says group project one can see who likes them and who does not. There are people who like group project and there are people who hate them. Some people like to work together and all share responsibilities but there are the people who have had bad experiences with group projects. It is interesting to see how people act in a group setting. Some people sit back and let others do their work and some work hard and try to get everyone involved. The roles of group members can be categorized and analyzed.

All throughout middle school and high school teachers will always assign a group project where an uncooperative student causes a whole group to come “crashing down,” leaving the other students with a huge hole in their grade. I am against group work because they have more negative characteristics, such as, that it takes more time, dealing with difficult people, and struggling with trust of others. Many group projects leave students feeling frustrated and angry which diminishes the educational value of the process altogether.

I need to agree that group work helps students in the long run, even though I despise it. Group work is here to stay. It helps students develop key social skills, teaches them some of the main points of teamwork, and projects tend to be a beefier part of the student's grade and help from other students may boost that grade.
