What is anthropology? This is a question that can be answered in numerous ways, but we are going to define it as simple as possible. If we break the word down into its two components it means the study of human beings. “Anthropo” means human beings or human kind and “logy” or “logia” is Greek for the study or knowledge of something. When we put it all together, it is the study of human beings which can be very broad. Anthropology can be broken down into four subfields: physical anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and cultural anthropology.

At the table there was a student in the Anthropology program and on her table she had things that related to anthropology. For example, she had skulls and stuff animals such as lemur because Anthropology looks at the study of human and animal development. I also learned that anthropology has seveal subfields with in the major. For instance, you can go study sociocultural anthropology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology and much more. Furthermore, occupations in Anthropology are growing fast. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of anthropologists and archaeologists is expected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations.” Those with anthropology majors can work in a variety places. They can work for universities, museums, private companies and even with the government. Anthropology is offered as a minor or a concentration here at William Peace and those are interested in the major are required to take Cultural Anthropology, Biological Anthropology and an additional 12 elective course hours with courses focused on the major. In society today, the discipline of anthropology has made a tremendous shift from the practices it employed years ago. Anthropologists of today have a very different focus from their predecessors, who would focus on relating problems of distant peoples to the Western world. In more modern times, their goal has become much more local, in focusing on human problems and issues within the societies they live.

Forensic anthropology is the physical or biological studies of a human skeleton. The purpose of a forensic anthropologist is to discover secrets hidden in bones. Forensic anthropologists are trained physical anthropologists. The difference between the two are the amount of knowledge involved in forensic anthropology. In forensic anthropology science, biology, and culture are applied to the legal process.

The evidence that they find gets relayed to the medical examiner. Forensic anthropologists have the ability to classify the cause of death by examining marks or fractures found on the bones which in return helps officials determine the weapon used. All of this information helps the medical examiner find the cause of death, based on damages to the bones that a forensic anthropologist finds.

Definition for Forensic Anthropologist: As a Forensic Anthropologist you will be working with and investigating disease people. You will study the entire body as well as the skeletal structure and be able to get specifics as to who the body you are investigating belongs to and be able to differentiate the sexes and ethnicities though the dead body. You will need a Bachelor’s in anthropology or a higher degree in that area. They primarily work in universities or at forensic labs. They would help in the categorization of deceased bodies and determining who the body or skeletal system belongs to. They assist in cases where you need to find out who someone is for detective cases.

Out of all three resources, “Puzzles of the Chesapeake” by Sally Walker, “Forensic Anthropology” by an unknown author, and “30,000 Skeletons” by Smithsonian Education, but presented by Kari Bruwelheide, “30,000 Skeletons” is by far better at explaining the role of an anthropologist. It is unbeatable because it is a video and Kari Bruwelheide has personal experience of being a forensic anthropologist. A forensic anthropologist is a scientist that studies human remains, or in another word, skeletons, to try to find out information.

Your Work: Forensic anthropologists work with professional organizations to identify disaster victims. They analyze skeletal and badly decomposed human remains. They will try to assess the age, sex, ancestry, stature, and unique features of the skeleton. They will frequently work with forensic pathologists, odontologists, and homicide investigators. Their goal is to be able to match the skeleton with a missing person or victim.

Forensic anthropologist work with law enforcement agencies and assist in processing skeletal evidence. They study bones, a field known as osteology, and profile research subjects by gathering information used to determine the individuals ages at death, sex, and physical condition. They are expected to use scientific standards in their work.

My career plan is to go to college and study to pursue the fields of criminology, politics, the legal field, athletic training, and lobbying. Currently, I am undecided on what my future career will be, but I know that I would want to have a career in the social sciences because my goal is to have a career that would positively impact the community around me. Forensic Anthropologist involves with the study of human remains for legal purpose. This job helps the ever expanding world of criminal law and the need for justice. It helps bring answer in the science community on how to analyze and distinguish decaying remains and how to identify their identity. In conclusion forensic anthropologists allow for murders or accidents to be revealed and slowly let them rest in peace.

When I and two other people left class and walked to the Anthropology open house, we were stopped outside of the door to receive the paper. We were told we needed 6 other stamps in total to get the extra credit for the assignment. One stamp was given to use at the door.

Since the emergence of anthropology in the late 1800’s, the customs and methods of this academic discipline have been altered in many ways. It is assumed that in the early years of anthropology, theorists relied on travelers in order to articulate their theories (Dahl 2017). This practice is known as armchair anthropology and involves creating theories without any fieldwork. Some examples of famous armchair anthropologists include Edward Burnett Tylor and James Frazer. The work of both theorists involved no travelling or conducting of fieldwork. Early anthropology focused on primitive cultures and how societies transformed from being barbaric to civilized. In modern days, anthropology is discovering new topics to study every day and the information relies a great amount on fieldwork and lab work conducted by anthropologists to support their findings. As some of the early methods of anthropology continue to be used by anthropology, more are being developed in order to produce more efficient research and theories.

Though I have known for a few months the basic path I have wanted to take regarding my career, Political Science, I hadn’t focused the general study down enough to be helpful enough to find a career path. After this course, I realized that I had a passion for design and international relations. Using these two factors, I was able to narrow down my major so that it would have an emphasis on international relations, with an urban planning minor. With this combination of knowledge, I am able to focus on developing communities in an international sense, along with being able to focus on developing communities nationally or even
