ANIMAL CAPTIVITY: A Socio-Scientific Issue Beth Walters Some animals are more vulnerable than other species to extinction. This is due to a variety of reasons some are; if certain species are only found in a specific area or location this increases their risk to become extinct, animals who depend on certain habitats or diet requirements become more exposed to the prospect of becoming extinct will not be able to adapt to alterations made from human or natural effects to their food source. Furthermore if species have long life expectancies but low reproductive rates then this impacts the species potential to become extinct. Slow moving or flightless birds are also more vulnerable to hunting and poaching due to lack of defence. Animals that have significant value to individuals, communities or countries are often more likely to become extinct due to a perspective that economic value and monetary success is more important than a species of animals. However some people hold a different view altogether that species should be held in captivity to help animals reproduce and sustain the decreasing population; this too though has negative impacts upon some species. …show more content…
By discussing and comparing how animal captivity has affected these endangered animals clarity can be gained as to what is successful, what needs improvement and what is detrimental to certain species when it comes to captivity
Do you think it is good to keep animals in captivity? I do, here’s why. Here is my opinion on this topic which will be explained farther into the essay. We should keep animals in captivity because the zoo is a great way for urban citizens to see wildlife on a tight budget, a great way of income for some city run zoos, and a great way of entertainment.
Captivity against law unsigned documents. Abuse, infliction, and affliction. What are you gonna do about it? For thousands of years, we have used predators to hunt for us and their reward being stuck in cages and prostitution. They come back in free will or in fear. Ever since the beginning of time, we have been trying to control these wild beasts. What happens when they're not there to finish the life cycle? EXTINCTION. We have lost 99% of our animal species, most of this loss is from billions of people keeping animals in captivity.
The world stripped of human intervention was created by God to be a magnificent place, which glorified God. We, as beings made in the image of God, were given dominion over the earth. However, where does our rule become unjust? Where do we overstep our boundaries? Throughout history, humans have strived to gain ultimate control of a planet they did not create. Some aspects in nature should be left to its own devices to be beautiful and glorify God, their intended purpose of creation. Humans have no right to captivate orcas because we cannot provide for their needs and we force them into a world they did not want. We force orcas into tanks not nearly large enough, we force them to mix with orcas not from their social pods, and we force them to perform for our entertainment.
Do you think that animals should be kept in captivity there whole life's. When people put animals in zoos or captivity that keeps the animal safe. Although keeping animals in captivity is bad because they don’t get to be themselves, they should keep animals in zoos or captivity because it helps them not go extinct, it brings happiness to families that go the zoo, and zoos bring in enough money to build better animal enclosures.
The author of this article, Michael D. Lemonick, discusses how some animals aren't able to be kept humanely in captivity. This article mainly focuses on elephants that are kept in captivity. Normally elephants roam up to, if not more than, 30 miles a day and they socialize with up to 20 other elephants a day. While in captivity, elephants are not experiencing their lives the way they should. If an elephant is in an exhibit that is too small for them, they can develop serious health issues such as, foot problems, arthritis, and even premature deaths. Most zoos aren't equipped to take care of elephants like they should. Lemonick discusses zoos across the country that have stopped exhibiting elephants altogether, due to severe issues seen in elephants.
Within my project I aim to discuss whether it is right to keep animals captive. In particular, if it is right to keep them captive for our entertainment. Therefore, my territory will be animal captivity. Recently, a lot of speculation and negative, alarming media has come out of SeaWorld, exposing what really goes on behind closed doors. This includes various celebrity protests from Steve-O and Remy Guillard and also the popular Netflix documentary ‘Blackfish’ uncovering the poor health of the animals and the consequences of keeping wild animals in captivity. Many become so frustrated that they kill the trainers and bully and become aggressive to the other animals around them. Therefore, my project will mainly focus on SeaWorld, as well as touching on various other forms of animal captivity to show how wide scale and immoral this problem is. This will include looking at numerous wildlife parks, zoos, circuses and discussing keeping exotic animals as pets.
The topic of the treatment of captive animals in both zoos and aquariums is one of high controversy. It is argued that the capturing and breeding of wildlife, holding them in captivity may present them with unnecessary risks. This however is dependent on the species of animal.
Did you know that in 2018, The Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus will be retiring their elephant act (Mendoza). The topic I will be discussing with you guys today is animals in captivity, or otherwise known as zoos and aquatic centers. We need to care about this topic because people and protestors are taking it out of hand. Some animals need zoos to care for them. I personally care for this topic because zoos are a fun thing to do with your family or friends. As long as they?re not hurting something they shouldn?t be, I don?t see why it is a bad thing. Today I will be arguing with Haylee on why animals in captivity isn?t a bad thing.
In May 2016, a critically endangered gorilla was shot dead by zoo officials after a young child slipped into its enclosure. The incident created an uproar, with the public debating either the mother’s parenting skills or the justification of killing in an emergency situation. The public outrage was of no avail, to an incarcerated animal who had no choice but to die at a place it never belonged. It is now more crucial than ever to question the relevancy of keeping animals captive in zoos and aquariums.
Zoos have been around for thousands of years holding thousands of different species for humans to marvel at. The first recorded instance of animals in captivity was in fifteen hundred B.C. in egypt where animals from all over Africa were kept. Zoos have been used as ways for people to view animals they would most likely never have a chance to see in the wild. This is why zoos have been so popular because everyday people have the opportunity to see animals that they would have never seen before. Unfortunately animals living in zoos have no chance of living in their natural habitat. They will spend their entire lives living in a enclosement being marveled at by humans. Animals should not be kept in captivity because no living creature should
Is it a good idea to put animals in captivity? This is a very controversial subject. You can find many people on both sides I chose to talk about the positive side about putting animals in captivity. Animals should be able to live in zoos because they live longer, they live in a better environment and they get feed better.
keeping animals in captivity can have many effects upon the animals, some negative and some positive. An example of the negative impact is the orca whales that are kept in Sea World. Many of the orcas in captivity have collapsed dorsal fins, this is a result of many of the whales being either sick or injured. In zoos many animals develop a condition known as 'zoo chosis' which is similar to dementia, as a result of this many animals show distress when they are in their enclosures and often swim or pace in circles. Many animals in captivation often become anxious or aggressive due to being continually watched by the public and having no space to hide, animals often react this way because to them being watched all the time can be predatory and
Many horrific things happen to animals while in human captivity. One of these things is the unnatural treatment of animals in captivity. Animals in the wild must work for their food and this makes them stronger and more capable to survive. These animals in captivity however, do
According to PBS.com there are 16,928 species listed as endangered, and captive breeding may be their only chance for survival. However; studies have shown that captive breeding has not been as successful as it was thought to have been. When performing captive breeding techniques and releasing these animals back into the wild, they do not know how to maintain life. To increase the chances of animals surviving after captive breeding is preformed; we must preserve and protect wild habitats. For animals to endure survival, they must also be trained on how to eat, defend themselves, find a mate, and uphold adequate shelter. Seeing that this can be very time consuming, and cost a lot of money, public funding and support is necessary.
This article informs the audience about the deadly dangers of having wild animals kept in captivity. It also explains why keeping animals isolated and away from their natural habitat with no freedom is inhumane. There is no educational benefit from keeping them away from the wild which is their home. It is not safe for the animals nor the people visiting the zoos. In the past few years, there has been over seven cases where a person was attacked or fatally killed by a wild captive animal. Many people blame the animals for everything, but a wild animal that was taken from their home and brought to a place nothing like home and with no type of freedom, of course it is normal to rebel.
