Anglo Saxon Values In Beowulf

One of the main reasons we study literature from different cultures and different themes is that we can learn about those people, in this case, the Anglo-Saxons. From reading Beowulf, we can learn about the values, religion, and culture of the Anglo-Saxons. Three values that these people found important are loyalty, bravery, and honor. In the Anglo-Saxon time, the people found loyalty as the most important role in their lives. The people prove loyalty for their king and their families as well. The Saxons showed their leader loyalty by proving themselves as they take care of the leader hand and foot at whatever cost. As found in Beowulf, Beowulf shows loyalty himself by going assisting Hrothgar, the king, because of what Beowulf’s father had done. Ecgtheow had needed help and Hrothgar was the one that assists him. Beowulf felt it was only loyal that he returned his king the favor. Bravery is a courageous behavior or character. The warriors in the Anglo-Saxon time, Thanes, bravery is expected of them. Bravery is heroic. In this case, protecting whoever it may be is heroic. Bravery was not an option for the Saxons, it was inevitable. Found in the Beowulf excerpt, Beowulf goes up against Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. Hrothgar’s men were cowards as they wouldn’t attack anything they thought was greater than them. Beowulf himself accepts the challenges and defeats all three of the monsters. So how does bravery in Beowulf and the human condition relate? Throughout life, people face conflict. Some take the initiative and attack the conflict, while others just run away from the problem. Beowulf faces the conflict that Hrothgar’s men won’t face, not taking care of the monster, Grendel. This example of conflict teaches us that if we just become fearless and overcome the challenge(s) regardless of what may or can happen that we can overcome
