An honest AWAI Copywriting Program Review by Professional Copywriter Dan Furman
On this page, I’ll be reviewing a popular home-business opportunity / product. In this case, a copywriting product.
Quick note: This is an honest, unbiased review. In interest of full disclosure, I am an affiliate, and will get a small commission if you buy it through the link at the bottom of the page. Believe me, it’s not enough to risk tainting my name in any way. That’s why my review below is as honest as possible. I’ll tell you the good AND the bad, and let you make up your own mind.
The Product: The Accelerated Program for Six Figure Copywriting from AWAI (American Writers & Artists Inc.) , which is a home study program designed to turn you into a

My answer to that is simple: The type of copywriters that will come out of this course don’t worry me. You know what type of competition hurts me? People from India writing for a nickel a page. That’s who hurts me. Professional copywriters charging a professional rate? They don’t hurt me at all – they help me, because the more professional copywriters that are out there, the more legitimate the copywriting business is.
Enough preliminary stuff – I go ahead and get access to the course:
The AWAI Accelerated Program for Six Figure Copywriting essentially consists of an online program (it’s printable too) of more than 700 pages of material, member forums, support, videos, job postings, etc. (note – when I first reviewed the course, it was printed. But wow, this new online version is sweet.)
Full disclosure – I then cheated and went right to the job board. And truthfully, I was a little underwhelmed. There really aren’t that many jobs posted there (like 5-10 a month.) However, as I’ll explain in a minute, you really shouldn’t be relying on AWAI to find you work anyway.
But The Bottom Line is This: This is a pretty good copywriting course.
There’s no two ways around it – I’m a professional copywriter, and AWAI’s course is a solid introduction to the art of direct response copywriting.
Now, let me be crystal clear – it is NOT going to turn you into me overnight. I’ve been doing
I have truly enjoyed writing for most of my life and after this class I will continue to enjoy writing hopefully with more skill. I have always viewed myself as a fairly strong writer and this class has reaffirmed that for me, but it has also shown weaknesses in my writing. As an introduction level class this has been one of my favorites; at some point I will take a higher level, even though it is not required for my major. Even though this class is almost over I am continuing to learn. I also love that this class will help me with literally ever other class in my college career. I am not a particularly strong reader, but as my writing skills improve so do the reading skills. While in this class I have learned a lot about everything from what I can improve, to subjects that interest me, and constructing a successful paper.
I have written more in the past year in this course than I probably wrote throughout high school career. This class made me notice that prewriting really does make a difference in the end result as well as having a peer critique your paper. Instead of writing a quick paper and just handing it in, I was actually forced to take the time out to write a rough draft, read my own work out loud, and revise my work. It helped me make my writing more organized and have a better flow throughout my paper In the future, I will continue to use this method as well as visit the many resource we have on campus that can give feedback what can make my paper better or just checking for grammar errors, spell check, and sentence fragments.
When I first started this course I didn’t know what to expect. I really enjoyed writing but there was a lot of areas that I needed to work on. When I first started to review the modules I was blown away by all the helpful sites that were at my disposition. The Power points and different sites completely changed my whole perspective of writing to a whole new dimension. Thanks to the modules I am more confident right now before I even begin an essay. I remember in the past how beginning an essay was so difficult for me because I didn’t know how to even start. In this course I have learned how to begin an essay, how to manipulate information, and how to use in-text documentation properly. These are just some of the few things that I will definitely be taking with me in the future for my courses and personal growth.
Throughout this course, I was able to assess and evaluate my weaknesses and strengths in writing. This class has truly brought out my ability to write, a skill I did not believe I had. I now know what it takes to become a college-level writer. Also, at the beginning of the course I did not particularly enjoy writing. Now, however, I have a greater respect for
Letter may wander off topic at times; body is either too wordy or short and choppy.
I write to you because I express the utmost interest in working for the Writing Class 227. A current sophomore at Portland Community College, I am a extraordinarily motivated, determined individual with a drive to succeed and a skilled individual for everything Writing. I love to interact with people, and I have a strong desire to please and satisfy. As a student, I find that writing allows me to be the most creative, while maintaining efficiency and ease. But most importantly, Apple and its products allow the user to follow his passions, his dreams, his ambitions, and his daily tasks of life with so much effectiveness.
Throughout the first eight week’s courses, Amy demonstrated a high level of competencies in understanding and applying theory into practice. She was also able to utilize the supports provided to her through the college to vastly improve her professional writing skills, limiting her grammatical errors and increasing her well-deserved passing grades.
Moreover, I consider homework assignments and activities in this course to be helpful. They have enhanced my writing skills, as I know how to write a story, a scenario, and how to support my argument. Frankly speaking, English writing must be my weakest point. However, due to our professor, all instructions were given in a precise manner and I could understand all tasks.
Currently I am enrolled in the Fire Science program at J. Sargent Reynolds. Writing courses required for
When I started the English Composition course I expected an entirely different type of writing. I expected more of a story telling writing, novelist, story and screenplay writing. To my surprise, it was a different world of grammar, style, voice, sentence mechanics and structure guidelines. I was afraid of something new and challenging. I expected more of a three act structure to write a novel or a short story but the course was different. Different in a helpful way that it opened my eyes to how the overall writing process works.
Scott also told me that he has turned in his Writing Methods section in his REC 367 class.
Inventory: I am an independent learner, so this course is perfect for my learning style. I’m also a spatial learner which means I take in information by studying graphics. One way I would
Over the semester I have been challenged and intrigued over and over by the content of this course and the professor, who thought I could develop a fairly strong paper if it was not for all my grammatical errors. It has been a very enlightening and enthralling experience that has taught me a new way to write a paper. In high school there was only one way to write and that was it. I think that this class is a great way for students to think out of the box, rather than having to be stuck. It allows them to write more freely about a subject, and I am very thankful for that. I have learned many new skills and improved the skills I already
Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.
The major concern was that students both past and present did not meet the expectations of professional writing. These complaints were expressed by both corporate executives and graduate faculty. The situation was summed up at a curriculum review meeting. They may have the greatest ideas in the world but, if they cannot express them clearly and persuasively in simple paragraph form, that is clear, concise, and grammatically correct, they are of no use to the company.
