The American people are protected by the tireless efforts of wonderful police officers across the nation. From large metropolitan areas to small departments with a couple of officers, men and women have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving the American people. The American police force is made up over 1 million personnel and the actions of a few overshadow the outstanding acts or heroism made every day by police officers across the nation. News that goes viral about police officers usually involves egregious acts that embarrass the force however kind acts out of the love in these officers happens 100 times more. A NYPD officer, who didn’t know he was being watched, stopped and talked to a homeless man one cold night. He went and
Although police officers take an oath to protect and serve citizens in our society. we have some officers that our corrupt and willing do anything just to protect themselves from being exposed from their unethical behavior. In 1994 three officers from New Orleans police department committed an unspeakable crime murder for hire and a violent drug gang. The killing of Kim grove was thirty-two years old and was gunned down by police officer that were there to protect her instead they killed her.
As well some officers use excessive force to subdue unarmed people, causing injuries. Now police should be respected by everybody. Not all police officers are bad cops. Many times have police officers saved countless people from dangerous person or group of people. Also police officers don’t get enough credit for what they do. Cops all around the world risk their lives to protect their nation's citizens. All police officers shouldn’t be judged on few officers who don’t make responsible choices. It’s just as bad when people disrespect law enforcement. Without police officers, America would be far from equality. Inequality in America doesn't stop there. Practically every American has a device or access to a device that has internet. Billion of people are on the internet every day. Our society is caught up on social networks, dating
Growing up everyone has been told stories of cops and how they represent being hero’s. Cops are supposed to save peoples lives and stand up against crime and violence but the stores we have been told are not exactly one hundred percent correct. The LAPD was involved in one of the most talked about scandals known as the Rampart Scandal where many police officer where involved in the beating, racial discrimination, and racial profiling.
You’ll see the media blow up stories of police officers doing good deeds, talking a man out of jumping off of a bridge, saving innocent lives, and yes, some cops are amazing human
If someone is associated with a person or individuals that has a negative point of view about police officers, they generally seem to share the same opinion. Police officers as a whole are looked at as heroes, but there is a percentage that are looked at as being corrupt or those who use their power past their scope of authority. That small percentage are typically individuals that do not follow their training or lack the proper training. This is a huge vulnerability when an act of violence takes place and officers hesitate or goes outside of their scope of use of force. Today our communities feed on the negative reaction put out by media.
In my opinion, I think police officers are people the society should normally look up to an illustration of discipline and protectors of law and order. As citizens, we see police officers help in dangerous situations, enforce the law, and help protect our rights. Some people see police officers as an extension of the government. As a result of that, people take their actions more highly by the public. An example made by Study.com was “Not everyone cares how a librarian treats customers, but everyone does care about how police officers treat members of the public. This kind of scrutiny often leads to a lot of criticism, and criticism from the public feeds into the idea of the 'us vs. them' mentality of a police subculture.”
In his article The Top Ten Worst Things About Being a Police Officer, Roufa writes “All too often, cops are portrayed as big, dumb, knuckle draggers or gung-ho head thumpers, but in truth so many are smart, compassionate and caring people who really do want to help others and make a difference in their communities.” Many americans are completely unaware of the everything going on with the police and black people. And when someone finally hears about something or an incident that happened, they will most likely automatically assume that police officers should not be trusted either because they did not receive all the correct information or they have been persuaded by the media. Because of how the media has been portraying police lately, it is not surprising how people are acting towards
Police officers have been the center of attention for many years now. They appear in the news, on television, you name it. Living in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area, I can proudly say the police force have a great impact on this society. However, whether that impact is villainous or heroic, there is no way to be completely sure. Just like the President of the United States, the police take an oath that goes like this: “On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the Constitution, the community, and the agency I serve, so help me God.” (IACP). With this oath, rest assured that the police’s intentions are not atrocious. Police officers are not superheroes – which would be nice – and they are certainly not perfect. Under that badge and uniform is a human made with flesh and blood just like yourself; and a human who makes lots of mistakes as well. While recognizing that some police abuse their power and recognizing the negative aspects of police force, the bigger picture shows that police officers do more good than harm.
For several decades, the United States has taken on the police role for the entire world. This has been particularly useful to America in terms of forming allies and assisting those nations in need. Since gaining its independence from the British, America has progressed from expansionist to isolationism to protecting democracy. Therefore, in my view the United States has assumed the responsibility of policemen of the world.
It goes without saying that police officers have one of the most difficult jobs on the face of the planet. To begin with, when a uniformed officer leaves his or her home each morning or evening to go to work, they can never be fully confident that they will return home. The threat of death while on the job is constant, and while danger is always looming, the day-to-day tasks of the job can often be tedious and boring. In addition to the inherent danger and tedium in a police officer’s job, police officers must also contend with a lack of respect from the general public, which has greatly increased since highly visible events in Ferguson, Missouri and in Baltimore, Maryland. With this constant on-the-job stress, and disrespect and combativeness
The nature of police work can be one of stress and long, hard working hours in which police officers deal with many types of situations that endanger themselves and their fellow officers. The fact that many people do not trust, appreciate, or support the police department is a terrible result of the public being taught to hate them. They do not like the police presence and the authority that the police have over them. Once a police officer shoots a suspect who more than likely deserved it due to the intent of harming or killing a civilian or a fellow officer, the public outcry is that the police are killers and that they will shoot anyone they come into contact with. Although we hear about
First of all a big “Thank You” to the cops who work day and night for the safety of the people and the society. The work cop do for the people is highly praise- worthy. Today we can walk and do legal things without fear because of cops who make it possible for us. But there are some people who doesn’t see this and instead tell others about the danger of cops. Yes, there are some bad cops out there who had intentionally or unintentionally taken wrong decisions and had harmed the reputation of the police department. This doesn’t mean every cops are the same.
Patrol Officers are not assigned a case to try and solve. In most major cities police departments have enough personal to cover every aspect of a crime, however, the role of the patrol officer during investigations has increased. On page 23, in the book, under the patrol officer as an investigator, it mentions that the role of the patrol officer has been limited, however, as time continues that same role seem to increase. The role of the patrol officer has taken over some of the same responsibilities as the investigators have. Such as providing immediate assistance to victims, locates witness, and interviews both victims and witnesses. Also, the patrol officer has the authority to initiate and complete investigations of certain
Police officers used to be called the peace keepers. Now they really are just Law Enforcement officers. It seems like the only thing the force cares about it meeting quotas and getting money. Which means that officers are making more unnecessary stops and arrests causing hostility between themselves and people. With violence increasing, police officers behaviors and tactics have become more aggressive, causing a rise in unnecessary police violence in the last 10 years, especially with those of minority races. Everyone knows police are not perfect, no human is, but more often than not, police use the force necessary for in order to keep themselves and others safe, but not always. Yes, there are bad police officers, and those officers should
It must also be said that obviously all officers are not corrupt or out to kill. Certainly the actions of bad police make it even harder on those who genuinely wish to do an honest job and be upstanding in their privileged positions. In all honesty, the actions of officers who are either corrupt, badly trained, trigger happy or just scared and or inept are making things bad for decent officers and everyone else as well. Something has to give and more dialogue has to start happening or we will simply be doomed to more of the same. If things ever get so bad that this country finds its citizens facing off against any branch of law enforcement, hopefully those in uniform will realize in time that, they are us, just as we are them. Here’s to hoping
