Have you ever looked at something and wonder how it came to be? It was probably created by one (or all) of the five fields of social studies. The five fields of social studies are culture, economics, geography, government, and history. They all have a huge impact on our country. Some even combine and effect the country. For example, the history of African-American culture effected America. Now you know what the five fields of social studies are but now you need to learn about what each one means. The first field is Culture. Culture is the arts manifestations of intellectual achievement regarded collectively. Economics is the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth. Economics can even be used a few different ways. They are the study of scarcity, the study of how people use resources, or the study of decision-making. One of the central tenets of economics is that people want certain things and will change their behavior to get those things according to American Economic Association. The economic study ranges from the very small to the very large. Much of economics involves the use of data gathered by governments, businesses, or in the laboratory to test the hypotheses about whether a certain program, event, or incentive will have the expected effect. Government is the governing body of a nation, state, or community. When you hear the word government you usually think of the capitol building or the white house in Washington, D.C.. Government can be defined by the people involved, the system in place, or the process in use. The government impacts our everyday lives because it regulates different services that include protection, electricity, health care, maintenance and water. The fifth and final field is History. History is the study of the past. All developed countries have their National Archives and a historical profession, both paid for out of taxpayers' money. Those who study history, for career purposes, or just personal enjoyment, have other reasons apart from this all-embracing justification for natural resources being channeled into the study of history. History happens each and every day and changes the country. It can also affect the way we see the United States. Even the smallest things can change an entire nation. So now you know how these five things that seemed so small affects our nation every day. They are culture, economics, geography, government and history. You can always learn more about these five things and to help change our nation. You can also make just as big of an impact as these five fields.
