A Summary of the O.J. Simpson Trial

Richard Rubin,a glove designer and manufacturer, testified for the prosecution. He said that the gloves O.J. Simpson wore when he worked as a sports commentator were the same design as the gloves found at the crime scene and on O.J.'s estate. He identified them as Aris Lights, model number 70263. These are the same type of gloves Nicole bought Simpson in 1990. When Simpson was asked to put the gloves on in front of the jury the gloves appeared not to fit. The prosecution suggested the blood shrank the gloves. Blood expert, Herbert Mac-Donell had conducted an experiment to show that the blood wouldn't have shrunk the gloves as much as the prosecution says it did.

The book that I am going to introduce is Outrage: The Five Reasons Why O.J. Got Away With Murder, written by Vincent Bugliosi, and was published on June 17, 1996. We all know that Nichole Simpson and Ronald Goldman were stabbed to death and their bodies were discovered on June 12, 1994 early morning. It was said that after a car chase, O.J. was found with $9,000 I cash, his passport, disguise, and a gun. O.J. Simpson who is her ex-husband was acquitted October 3, 1995, for their deaths in a trial that riveted the nation and divided people along racial differences. In 1997, he was ordered to pay a little over $33 million for their deaths. O.J. Simpson is still serving time in prison for things like kidnapping, robbery, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and numerous other charges. Mr. Bugliosi sums up five reason why the case was lost. Those five can be labeled as the jury, the change in venue or settings, the judge allowing the defense to play the race card, the stupidity of the prosecution throughout the trial, and lastly the summation of what should really have been done. But in honesty when the media started reporting about this case it was already falling apart.

On the murder night of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, was a massive outburst on the media. As stated (Turvey December 1995) both bodies were found at 12:10Am, June 13 1994 inside of Nicole’s house located at 875 South Bundy reported by witnesses seeing a river of blood. As we get closer to the murder care of both Nicole and Ron many unanswered question starts to pile up, from who could had possibly had done this to why they ever did this.

Twelve Angry Men, a play by Reginald Rose, was written in 1955 at a time when America was involved in a cold war with communist countries. It shows the strength of a deliberative process that enables individuals, who have “nothing to gain or lose,” to reach a verdict. In the American jury system “everybody deserves a fair trial” and in Twelve Angry Men the defendant gets a very fair trial. The play “Twelve Angry Men” by Reginald Rose is a drama about twelve jurors deciding on whether a nineteen year old boy is guilty of murdering his father. The boy has a lengthy list of criminal changes, three witnesses testifying against him, and a weak alibi. This compels eleven of the twelve jurors to detect him as guilty. However, one juror believes that the others are not deciding fairly and are stereotyping. Juror eight, the one who names the boy not guilty, spends the entirety of the play persuading and arguing with the extremely irritable and opinionated juror three.

At around 5:00am the detectives on the case arrive at O.J.’s home. The evidence found at the scene of the crime was a bloody glove and a dark grey knitted hat said to have been left by the killer, and bloody footprint in the driveway of O.J.’s estate. Immediately after O.J.’s flight lands in Chicago, Detective Ron Phillips informs him that his ex-wife is dead. O.J.’s first response: “Who killed her?”

Nicole had been stabbed numerous times in the head and neck, there were also defensive wounds found on her hands. In the article, “O.J. Simpson crime scene photos: Warning Graphic Images ” an autopsy report revealed how Nicole and her friend Ronald’s bodies were found. In the article it states that Nicole , “...had an incised wound of neck... Incisions, left and right internal jugular veins. Transection of thyrohyoid membrane epiglottis, and hypopharynx. Much evidence was found such as DNA evidence, a glove, and hair. In the controversial court case of O.J Simpson and the murder of his wife Nicole, the guilty verdict incorrectly acquitted him based on the previous violence, the evidence found, and the personal consequences following his act.

According the law.umkc the day of the murder Simpson’s limo driver, Allan Park, went to pick him up, but when he buzzed through the intercom to let him know he was there, there was no response. Minutes later Park spotted Simpson’s Bronco at an intersection. Simpson then later went into his house through a back gate, then answered the door and supposedly said he was sleeping. Simpson’s blood was found on the driver’s door of the Bronco, and Goldman and Brown’s blood were found on the passenger side. Bloody socks were found in Simpson’s house by his bed. In court Simpson claimed that the bloody gloves were not his, so he had to try them on and they did not fit. However; a receipt was found that Brown purchased those gloves for Simpson years back. The footprints found at the scene were from a pair of Bruno Magil shoes in a size 12. Simpson wears a size 12. He claimed that he did not own a pair of the Bruno Magil shoes, but a photo from 1993 shows him wearing those shoes that match the ones at the murder scene. The topic of this paper is going to be Orenthal James (O.J. Simpson) and the infamous trial. Simpson was born on July 9, 1947 in San Francisco, California to Jimmie Lee Simpson and Eunice Simpson (CNN Library, 2016). O.J. Simpson is a high profile person/celebrity in the sports market. He is a former American football running back, broadcaster, actor, and convicted armed robber and kidnapper. Simpson attended USC where he played college football and won the Heisman trophy in 1968. Due to Mr. and Mrs. Simpson’s previous police record of domestic violence calls, we were in desperate need to talk to Mr. Simpson. We called Mr. Simpson shortly after he arrived at his hotel in Chicago. When we informed him of the murder of his wife, Simpson acted surprisingly calm and collected. He never asked how, where, or if there are any suspects. During his interrogation, when we asked about a cut on his hand, he claimed the cut was from golfing and that he reopened it when he smashed some glass in his hotel room (Linder). He boarded the first plane back to Los Angeles, that’s when he found us at his home conducting a full scale investigation. After we obtained enough evidence, we released a warrant for the arrest of Orenthal James Simpson.

The day was June 12, 1994 and only a few people would know that it would become a very important day in United States history. Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman are stabbed in Simpson’s Los Angeles home. Nicole Brown was the ex-wife of NFL superstar O.J. Simpson. O.J. came home the day after the murder and he found the police waiting for him and they placed him under temporary arrest. The next day OJ was at his attorney’s house and knowing he would be arrested fairly shortly, he rode off in his Ford White Bronco and caused what would be known one of the greatest police chases of all-time. He would be arrested and would be put to a trial. This would only be the beginning of a very important trial.

In 1995, O.J. Simpson, one of the most acclaimed National Football League players, was tried on two counts of murder. This is a case that would stay inclusive forever in the eyes of most Americans; and that would change the way America’s legal system operated. During the trial racism evolved around Simpson and multiple inferences led to an especially controversial definitive, later known as the “trial of the century.”

Through mistakes made within the investigative process of the case, the outcome of the case was affected. On the collection of evidence many pieces were contaminated causing flaws in this evidence. When packaging blood swabs the cotton swatches used were packed in plastic bags and then left in a hot truck. This blood was also contaminated as the technician who handled it still had the blood voluntarily given by Simpson on his gloves (Jones, 2009). Degradation of missed blood, which was left for three weeks after the initial run through, may have turned unusable by the time investigators examined it. It was weeks after finding the socks at O.J. Simpson’s house that the police noted the blood on them. Destruction of evidence may have been caused through the bodies not being taken to be autopsied till 10 hours after they were found. During evidence collection the majority was compiled by a Junior Detective, who was taped dropping blood swabs as well as wiping tweezers with dirty hands, this made the evidence highly contaminated (Deutsch, 1995).
