A Short Description of Rosslyn Community Mukesh Mishra Assignment for Introduction to Community Social Work Course No- SLWK2010 Dalhousie University The world appears to be wrapped in a web of diplomatic deception and intrigue. Communities are developed to uncloak the clutter of empty phrases. A community is a social unit of any size that shares common values. In every community, there are conditions present that affect the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. Communities are a major determinant of an individual’s attitude, characters and interpersonal relationships. The Rosslyn community consists of members from different cultures, backgrounds, ages, jobs and regions, all of whom take part in the same rituals, from summer festivals to evening strolls. Rosslyn has developed several programs to improve the wellbeing of its members. For example, the recently introduced Local Exchange Trading System (Siri, 2014) has encouraged the community’s economic growth and enhanced a sense of belonging among the community members. Asset based community development approaches are always given priority in Rosslyn. Various community development programs in collaboration of community members, third sectors and other stakeholders has been taking place in my community. Some members of the community are involved in activist network and support community awareness programs. I tend to think that one of the factors that has contributed to the great success of the Rosslyn community is the members’ ability to connect well together socially, mentally and sometimes economically. There are various factors that determine the members’ degree of cohesiveness and participation in the community. Some of them include intent, resources, belief, needs and preferences. Membership to the Rosslyn community is optional. However, I would encourage membership to the community by children below ten years is always encouraged. This is because at this age, children easily develop skills and knowledge and learn their roles.
