A sense of fellowship amongst similar people allows a person to become more comfortable with who they are through interactions with others who are going through—or have gone through—the same triumphs or hardships. Without this feeling of belonging, one could be driven into insanity. Moreover, it is a brilliant way to build communication skills and social networking skills, which can be beneficial when looking for jobs. In addition, community gathering in Jane and Finch happens sometimes with a BBQ or even a bake sale to raise money and support schools and other organizations. This demonstrates the bond that people have between each other in Jane and Finch, which the media doesn’t realize and make effort to show to world. Community is the difference between being and belonging. It is just too easy to just be a part of a group, but to feel like you belong to the group is far more meaningful. You can go to the meetings and know everyone’s names but none of that means anything if you don’t feel that you are a significant component in a group. Community is family. To me community has never been about the proximity of one person to another, but of the connection that those two people share. What makes community special is the idea that a collective group of diverse people that all share different attitudes, interests, and goals can come together and unite to bring something into existence. Members of a community are expected to look out for one another and work in solidarity with one another for the community. As a human being, it is imperative to be a member of some sort of community because, in a similar way of being part of a family, the experiences and ideals shared within the community give people a sense of purpose and place within society.

People are happiest when they feel a sense of connectedness, of belonging, of relationship. The society we’ve constructed in the 20th century is a poor fit to our natures. Society yearns for change; Buber’s answer, and mine in this paper, is community. But before we turn to a discussion of community, I want to further clarify the I-You, the language of community.

A community is a group of people that share a common or similar characteristic with each other. Some communities can also consist of people living together or practice worship. My essay will include the communities that I am part of which are my dance, school and church communities.

A community is established when more than two people share the same values and through time this personal connection evolves into a fellowship governed by rituals, traditions, and a particular form of communication that when taken together makes a group of individuals whether living in a specific geographical area or connected by ideals so distinct that their distinguishing marks allow them to stand out from among the crowd. They do not just believe in something like an organization but they need each other to survive and thrive. A good example is the Old Order Amish Mennonite community wherein the community serves as source of identity, strength and provides the reason why they should sustain the community’s way of life.

The strong sense of community that I have been privileged to know has been contributed to by many communities; however, two particular communities come to mind when I think about my own roles and personal growth.
