The Gift of a Rose A Rose for Emily is one of the “best-known short story by William Faulkner” (Mays 633). It is a short story filled with mystery, suspense, and tragedy. In this short story Faulkner uses symbolism to show logical tragedy, insanity, loneliness, and pride. Faulkner accomplishes this by letting symbolism help characterize the complex main character: Miss Emily Grierson. Symbolism is the act of using a person, place, thing, or event that figuratively represents or stands for something else (Baldick 633). When trying to explain anything to a reader you can do it directly but by using a symbol to achieve this it adds more meaning to what you are saying. The reason most authors use this literary device is to make the meaning of something more powerful and observable to the reader. When determining the meaning of symbols in literature there is never a wrong or right answer. Therefore the use of symbolism means having the story interpreted in a different perspective from reader to reader. This results in having the story passed on from generation to generation. The reason this short story is one of my favorites is because of Faulkner’s use of symbolism. For me it makes the story much more suspenseful and mysterious. I think Miss Emily Grierson is a very complex character and since she never spoke much while she was alive, after her death her life is like puzzle pieces that all the townspeople want to put together. The first time I discovered this story was for an English class in high school, since then I have studied the story a couple of more times and each time I discover more or question the symbolism. The protagonist Emily gave into the concept of death the minute her father passed away. Death prevented Emily from pursuing the greater things in life. On the long run, she died of a broken heart because of her father's death and regret. Faulkner presents an argument based of feminism and the nature of broken women. This short story covers the significance of the pursuing of happiness. Emily Garrison struggles to maintain her tradition and the rich status of her family in her small community. However, time change and Emily become a disgrace to her community when she was not married about the age of thirty.

Miss Emily is confined from society for the majority of her life by her father, so after he has died, she longs for relations that ironically her longing destroys. The despondency and obsession exuded throughout the story portray the predicament at hand.

Faulkner used a setting and time to show Emily had a hard time accepting change and moving on with her life. They story took place right after the Civil War. Most African Americans were loathed and discriminated but Emily was relived from her father. Money showed a social statement back then and Emily’s father had money. Since her father loaned the town money she had become a well appreciated woman even after his passing. This implies that the rose is merely a gesture of kindness to a pitiable character and nothing more. For those not comfortable with Faulkner’s response, perhaps the only other clue lies in the final page where a secret room reveals “faded rose colored” curtains and “rose shaded lights” (Faulkner, p.674). It may be that Faulkner used the rose to tie the beginning of the story with its end. While the rose in the title may or may not be symbolic, what it actually represents appears to be left open to interpretation.
