Power and control plays a big role in the lives many. When power is used as a form of control, it leads to depression and misery in the relationship. This is proven through the themes and symbolism used in the stories Lesson before Dying, The fun they had, The strangers that came to town, and Dolls house through the median of three major unsuccessful relationship: racial tension between the African Americans and the caucasians in the novel Lesson before Dying, Doll’s House demonstrates a controlling relationship can be detrimental for both individuals and The Stranger That Came To Town along with The Fun They Had show that when an individual is suppressed by majority they become despondent. The chair symbolizes how the Caucasians do not have anything to fear as they are in-control of everything that represents power and control in a community (eg. jail, education, politics, policing, etc). Also, Pichot’s Kitchen is used by Gaines to symbolise how power and control leads to depression and misery in the relationship. As Wiggins goes to visit Pichot’s, the owner of the plantation (he is caucasian), he is degraded as the whites do not attend the meeting at the time they had set however they take their time to enjoy and finish their dinner and Wiggins is forced to wait for them in the kitchen as he is black. This shows how he lives in a world where blacks are compelled to live by the rules and schedules of the white people as Wiggins outlines the occurrence as so; “The humiliation I had to go through, going into that man's kitchen. The hours I had to wait while they ate and drank" (Gaines 79). This quotation further proves that power and control leads to depression and misery in the relationship as the blacks are miserable because of the oppressive nature of the whites. The symbols used by Gaines help show how authority in a relationship, even in an as big system as communities, leads to sadness and hurt for the controlled group. Nevertheless, A Lesson Before Dying is not the only piece of literature that has symbols that display that power leads to misery in a relationship.
The Man I Killed is the story of the man that Tim O’Brien killed. However, this story is not true. He later mentions that he did not in fact kill the man, yet he was present and that was enough. This story, according to him, is told to show the reader how he feels, because O’Brien feels as though the truth is that by doing nothing, he killed the man, so in his story, he does kill the man. Imagery is the biggest literary device seen in this story, but diction also helps make the story seem more true, it helps the reader to truly believe that O’Brien did in fact throw the grenade that killed the man. This story is told from O’Brien’s point of view, which would be first person, despite the fact that the word “I” is
In the short story “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, there is a great deal of literary elements used to enhance the story. For example, imagery is used to draw the reader 's attention further into the story by having them see it happening in their head and allegory is used to pull the reader away from the story by referencing things that happened somewhere else. While these two literary elements are both used to magnify different parts of the story, as well as counterbalance each other, the literary device that this essay will be focused on is symbolism. While it appears in many parts of the story one of the most obvious uses of
Ernest J. Gaines story: A Lesson Before Dying, tells the story of a young man and his journey to become a man before his wrongly accused death sentence, and the journey of the people who helped him feel like he was. What It Means to Be Female in Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying Dewey Dell Bundren is essentially reliving the unsatisfying, lonely life of her late mother. We learn from Addie’s section in the novel that motherhood had never been a choice for her—it was something she had “given” Anse and never asked for anything in return. The births of her first two son’s did not lift the deep melancholy she was struggling with nor did they make her feel like a stereotypical mother.
In the novel, Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, the author uses many literary

In the book Those Who Wish Me Dead, Hannah made a good choice when she told Jace and Allison to set up the fire shelter. This is so because it is the only reason that Jace and Allison survived the fire. She said, “‘Connor?’ she said. ‘Listen to me now. Do what I say. You need to get that shelter up. Can you do that for me” (Koryta 366)? In other words, while she was in extreme pain, she summoned up the strength to authoritatively tell Jace to set up the fire shelter. This was a very important moment for many reasons. First off, it is the only reason that Jace and Allison survived (if they didn’t this book would have emerged very differently). Second of all, it was a very emotional point in the story because last time she was in this situation,
An Literary Analysis “To Hell with Dying” by Alice Walker “Poet, novelist, “Womanist’ activist, Spiritualist, animist, and Pulitzer Prize winner Alice Malsenor Walker has been referred to as a “lavishly talented writer’’’(Gates and Appiah as cited in Howard 31). Science fiction movies often depict the consequences of failing to slow the damage to the environment in the science fiction movie, The Day After Tomorrow, the weather on earth begins to do strange things. The ice caps start to melt and break, tornados rip through Hollywood, and tsunamis flood the coast. Jack Hall, a climatologist, explains global warming and the melting of the ice caps is to blame for this weather. He predicts the North Atlantic current will shut down, and the northern states will see the next ice age. The vice president dismisses his claims until his predictions come true in the following days. Eventually, the air in the north gets so cold that people seem to freeze within seconds resulting in a nearly unsurvivable ice age where people in the north must stay inside near a fire to survive. The dystopian future depicted in the movie The Day After Tomorrow reflect societal anxieties about earth’s changing climate.
One of the major themes portrayed in the book is theme of the possibility of resurrection. It is interpreted literally and/or figuratively. One example is from the first book titled, “Recalled to Life”, which talked about saving Lucie Manette’s dad, Dr. Alexander Manette, from the Bastille that he was kept in for eighteen years. Dr. Manette used to have a happy and peaceful life, but when he was imprisoned, he became mentally ill. However, when Lucie entered his life, he gradually went back to his old self. Here, Lucie, in a way, brought him back to life or resurrected him.
The theme we created for Death and the Miser is “Sometimes, the most difficult choice can turn out to be the best one.” Every single one of us at some point in our lives is going to have to make a tough decision. Some take a little more thinking than others. For example, the Miser was having trouble deciding whether to choose between good or evil, while he was aware of the consequences. He knew that no matter what decision he made, his life was going to change drastically. When Death refuses to kill him, he realizes that he had made the wrong decision and ended up being rewarded with the money and being sent to heaven. I am going to demonstrate my theme through the book A Month of Summer (Blue Sky Hill #1) by Lisa Wingate and the Jeopardy Theme Song by Merv Griffin.

In Up Front by Bill Mauldin one of the major themes is how important communication is during the war. Communication is a major factor when it comes to success in the war. Individual divisions need to be in contact with each other as well as family and friends at home. Bill Mauldin exemplifies this when he discusses the Stars and Stripes newspaper and 45th Division News in Up Front. Furthermore, a quote from the American General Dwight D. Eisenhauer and a propaganda picture produced by Winchester help support this theme. These three accounts together help show different aspects of communication in the war and how each is important. Although they all show different parts of communication for the war they all come together to show how it has changed the nature of American ideals.
