Many people influenced and events my reading and writing development throughout my childhood from my mother, my elementary librarian, and Sesame Street, to getting my first pair of glasses. We all have defining moments in our lives where we can look back and say, “That moment changed my life.” This is the story of the defining moment that changed the way I read and write, and I learned it from a whale!
It was the beginning of my seventh grade year. I was about twelve years old and, I guess you could say a nerd. I did well in school so I was placed in the Gifted and Talented program with other nerds in my class. As part of this program we were required to read at a certain level or read a certain number of books each semester. You

I thought to myself, hey, I like whales. I’ve read stories about ships and pirates and stuff before. This looks like something I might like. I can still smell the old paper and threaded binding resonating in my mind as I opened the book and scrolled through the pages, soaking in the vibrant illustrations of what would soon become my obsession for the next six months.
Happy with my selection and feeling fairly proud of myself, I take the book to the check-out desk. The desk is occupied by the stereotypical librarian. She is an older lady probably in her sixties with gray wiry hair and half square bi-focal glasses that sit on the end of her nose. As I place the book on the counter, she looks down her nose and through her glasses at me with a look of skepticism. Frowning as she speaks, she tells me that maybe I should choose something else. Undaunted, I refuse and ask to check out the book. She gives a few other suggestions but again, I refuse. She wishes me luck as she slides it back to me and I stuff the hefty book into my backpack.
I start reading the book and right away it is intimidating from the very first paragraph. I am faced with language and sentence structure I do not understand, what is a bedfellow and why does he carry a purse? Is he gay? Immediately I am second guessing my decision but I am determined to get through this book. It takes me the better part of a week to get through the first chapter. I
American history has had many defining moments over the last five decades which has helped America to develop to the way it is today. Each decade holding many life changing events and discoveries in them it would take a long time to cover each and every one of these so I have chosen a major event that I find to be of great worth to Americans today. We can all learn from the past events and work together to make American a safer and better place to live, and one way to do so is by learning from the past. Starting in the 1950’s we will discuss the most life changing and breath taking moments from each decade that this great county has seen through the 90’s and discover why they are all of significant value to the America we all live in
There I was. An undersized 3rd grader, meeting with the school librarian, who was probing at my ability to read and comprehend the book I chose for that week. It was during this particular week in which I refused to join the class in their sticky hand raid, but rather, shift through my new library at home. It was the weekend prior in which my grandmother purchased a white box from a garage sale.
On the first week of school in second grade, my teacher, Ms. Byrd, took us to the library to check out a book. I wasn’t very excited at the time because reading used to bore me. I viewed reading to be a hassle rather than a way to gain knowledge. As our class marched up the ramp leading into the library, we were immediately greeted by a fragile old woman with hair as grey as a pack of Alaskan wolves. The old lady turned out to be the school librarian. She was extremely enthusiastic about reading and asked the class “who is excited to pick out a book today?” All of my classmates swung
Nautilus elementary, 5th grade. Probably the grade that every kid either had crazy times and bad experiences. At this time, I was not the greatest at reading. Reading was at the bottom of my list because I thought it was pointless. Avoiding all the reading assignments that my crazy teacher gave us to complete. She was ridiculous! Made us read a book a week and then test the book the following week. This test was called an a.r test, this test not only showed that we understood and read the book but it also calculated our reading level. Being at a grade and half lower reading level was not the greatest. Always failing all the test and my grade dropping lower and lower didn’t make my look like a good kid. A couple of months went by and I
Already I can tell that this book is more difficult than most other novels I have read. It seems as though Roth is in favor of using long sentences and complex vocabulary. I sometimes had to reread sentences a few times because there was difficult vocabulary I needed to look up and the sentences were long. I needed to read each sentence piece by piece to make sure I could understand what the author wanted to convey to the reader. Although the text seemed overwhelming when I read the first few pages; once I began reading sentences in increments I could more easily understand the text.
My moment of self discovery was a coincidence. It was August 13th and it occurred right after my shift was over in Burger King. It started when I was going to Liberty bell gas station to hang out with my friends Julia and Deanne. They were two liberty bell regulars because they always bought cigarettes or “loosies” from liberty and they were pretty hard to miss. Julia was pale and had green hair but a green that resembled the statue of liberty. I met her through Deanne around January of 2017 and I liked how easy going she was.
I was in second grade and we were at the library. I had some extra time because my sister was playing in the ship that I thought I was too good for. I wandering in the nonfiction section and I found the shelves filled with books about countries. I was excited and decided to check out thirteen. We were in the car driving to Vermont and I was reading one of them. I was “really bored” because I had accidentally checked out a book from the “wrong publisher.” (Now I realize it was probably just the different names for the same company over time.) I finished about an hour before we arrived and so I was excited that I could read something else.
Ms. Napholz made us write these paragraphs on someone we have memories with. So, I decided to chose you since we have so many awesome memories together. I know that you will think this is very lame but I had to chose someone. Hopefully you will enjoy revisiting some of these moments we had together.
It seems to me that our most defining moments happen on the most ordinary of days. What starts out as yet another day at the office or at school, can hold some of the most radical changes to our lives, and I think that is part of God’s amazing power and beauty. We could be doing something we had done hundreds of times before, in my case, playing soccer. I took a ball to the upper right side of my face, around my eye, and the events that ensued helped me to realize God’s plans for my future degree path and thus, the rest of my life.
So far, senior year has been very stressing. I missed some classes because I had to fly to Oahu to attend a program for citizenship and because of that I missed 3 days of school, which got me behind with all my school work. I did talk to my teachers before I left but it got totally off hand because I got distracted with my job.
“When the doctors were taking out your tonsils, one of them was stuck to the side of your throat. When the doctors started to take it out, they accidently cut your throat a little. Now it’s bleeding. Don 't worry,
I haven’t experienced failure at work or elsewhere for a while now but when I first started working at Caribou, I had failed at so many things. Caribou was my first real job, that wasn’t an internship. It’s a pressure-filled job that requires you to able to make drinks quickly and accurately. To do that you have to have the recipe of all the drinks memorized in order to move quickly. The first few weeks were hard because I hadn’t memorized all the recipes yet and, therefore, wasn’t able to move quickly. However, after a few weeks, I picked up speed. I was able to make drinks (both hot and cold) quickly and accurately. The bad thing about my new found confidence as a barista was that when a rush hit, I was confident I could handle it. The morning rushes at Caribou are fast and never ending.
"Off we go!" Mama shouted. We (Gracie, Sarah, and me) were on our way to Carowinds, in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a very humid morning. I looked around and all I saw were the tall trees of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
He tied his boat off and started to climb the cliffs. He knew that no one had lived to tell what was behind the cloud, but still he climbed. He climbed so high he could almost touch the sky. Zack kept climbing and climbing once he reached the top of the rock he had this rush that made him feel like he was gonna pass out. He decided to sit down and take a sip of water he sat there for an hour, after he got up and started climbing more cliffs. Zack saw this huge cave so he decided to walk inside and he saw this red bright door that said “please knock”.Zack knocked a few times the door didn’t even open or make any movement.
gorgeous and from the moment I set my eyes on her I fell in love with
