1860 Presidential Election

In 1860, Southern states began to secede from the Union which lead to the American Civil War between the Confederates and the Union. The Confederates consisted of eleven Southern states while the Union consisted of 20 Northern states. What caused these Southern states to secede from the Union? During Abraham Lincoln’s presidential election in 1860, he won over the free Northern states which lead him to won. With Lincoln as president the Southern states feared the government would be more control by the North which meant a possibility of the abolishment of slavery.

The controversy over slaves ultimately led to the secession. Abraham Lincoln thinks slavery is wrong and he wants to stop it from spreading. Earlier, he had warned that slavery could separate a nation. In the 1860 election Lincoln is elected, but southerners are worried he will end slavery forever. Southern states start to secede because they are worried. First South Carolina succeeds, then North, Texas, and then Florida too. When Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first republican president, he only received 40% of the popular votes; he also beat three other candidates on top of that. Lincoln was responsible for a lot of changes and is also known as an icon in American History. Lincoln was a Kentucky-born lawyer and a former Whig Representative to the Congress. Lincoln was going up against Stephen Douglas in the Senate race; Douglas argued that the states should have a right to be a slave state or a free state, while Lincoln argued against slavery and the spread of it. Unsurprisingly, Lincoln had lost the Senate race, but his campaign against slavery brought national attention to the Republican Party, in 1860, Lincoln had won the Republican party’s nomination

Abraham Lincoln paying little heed to the way that basically had forty percent of the standard vote however completely crushed and overwhelm his competing contenders which are Stephen Douglas John Bell, and John C. Breckenridge. A champion amongst the most focal parts of Lincoln's race is that he held by far most of the Free states and none of the slave states. Absolutely when the eventual outcomes of the choice were related to specific in South Carolina and Charleston started meeting to discuss change. Lincoln was picked the sixteenth President of the United States on November 6th, 1860 and by November tenth lawmaking body had started meeting and movement talk was being developed.

Abraham Lincoln, born in Kentucky on February 12, 1809, served as the sixteenth president of the United States. He was the very first Republican to serve as president, eventually leading the Union to victory during the civil war. Lincoln opposed the idea of the expansion of slavery but acknowledged that he would not interfere with slavery where it existed. At the time just before the civil war, the Northern states and Southern states were divided into one main issue: slavery. The North tended to HATE slavery and the Abolitionists were common. The South felt threatened by this, because the capital was in the north, and it seemed like the government was completely on the side of the north. Starting with Wilmot’s proviso, which first made southerners think that Congress were abolitionists. Next the Kansas-Nebraska act or bloody Kansas, with both sides getting violent, it just added to the conflict between Northerners and Southerners.

Abraham Lincoln’s triumph in that election triggered frustration and a sense of unfairness from the South. His political republican views prompted southern states to try and succeed. South Carolina became the first state to declare its secession from the Union. (Doc 1.) They felt that they needed to protect their state’s right to maintain slavery.

1) The secession was a pivotal moment in American history. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, it caused alarm in several Southern states since he did not receive a single electoral vote from them. Since he was the first from the political Republican Party to become president, nobody quite knew what to expect and the South feared that he would disregard and corrode their values. Lincoln desired to place the slaveholding states under the non-slaveholding states to prevent slavery from spreading, which was the last straw that pushed South Carolina to secede on December 20, 1860. Even before Lincoln’s inauguration on March 4, 1861, seven states seceded.

Enter the presidential election of 1860, which brought these tribulations to a clash with dramatic cost. The Democratic Party divided into three groups along their provincial lines, with each person vying for control of the party and each holding dissimilar ideas about how to deal with servitude in the West. Their candidates consisted of John C. Breckinride, John Bell, and Stephen A. Douglas; their efforts would be rubbish, however, as Abraham Lincoln would be triumphant for the Republican Party. Lincoln stood on the grounds that the West should be completely liberated of slavery entirely; which apparently was sufficient as he won the election with less than forty percent of the popular vote. I believe that the biggest reason that the South wanted to secede, was the North wanted to eradicate slavery. There are other reasons that helped push the South to secede, like how the South wanted to have equal State Rights, or even Abraham Lincoln being elected president. A quote that shows that the South overreacted to lincoln being elected is “When President Lincoln got elected, the South was convinced he would end slavery, even though President Lincoln never said he would do that.” so when the South overreacted to him becoming president and seceded this just fueled the flames of the Civil War. These are the main reasons that I believe the South started the Civil War.

The Election of 1864 was important for many reasons, including the outcome of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, and the first Presidential Re-Elect since 1832. Abraham Lincoln ran for the Union Party and ran against General George B McClellan and John Fremont. Lincoln was very pessimistic about his chances of winning the Presidential race, as evidenced by the memorandum he penned, stating what he would do in the very likely event that he was not re-elected. The victories in Atlanta and Cedar Creek boosted Lincoln’s chances of winning immensely. Lincoln eventually won with a 55/45 split of the popular vote and an electoral landslide. His election eventually lead to the North’s victory in the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.

After Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, politicians in the southern states wished to secede from the northern states. President Lincoln opposed slavery and hoped to get rid of this act in any state that practiced it. The southern states viewed Lincoln’s vision as a threat to those states who supported slavery and they believed that having an anti-slavery president would endanger the states in many ways. For this reason, South Carolina became the first to secede six weeks after Lincoln became president and later on more states to follow the secession (lecture). The states who seceded became known as the Confederate states and the conflict resulted in the civil war which lasted from 1861 to 1865 (lecture). The secession all falls back to the disagreement between the North and the South’s different views on slavery based on three different factors which were geographic positioning, economic power and man power.

Abraham Lincoln won the electoral college vote and was elected into office being the official 16th president of the united states. Even though Lincoln only got 40 % of the population vote he destroyed his competition. His Competition was John C Breckinridge, John bell and northern Democrat Stephen douglas the U.S representatives for Illinois. Lincoln a former whig agent and kentucky advisor, challenged douglas to many debates while running for senate about slavery.Lincoln passion to win senate showed how hard he fought with douglas showing in the debates. While douglass argued that should slavery should be free or not should be up to the states while lincoln opposed this idea and wanted to let slavery break on its own weight and eventually

an abolitionist. Stephan A. Douglas, one of the other runners for the presidency said in a speech about Lincoln "... Mr. Lincoln invites, by his proposition, a war of sections, a war between Illinois and Kentucky, a war between the free States and the slave states, a war between the North and South" (Stampp, 80) Douglas believed Lincoln would cause war if he was elected because of his position in slavery. Lincoln, was elected president, but didn 't receive much popularvotes.
