Madison Miller Kean University EXSC 4605 – 02: Statistics in Exercise Science Professor Eckart February 6, 2024 1 From J. P. Weir and W. J. Vincent, Statistics in Kinesiology Web Study Guide, 5th ed. (Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 2021).
Chapter 2 Problems to Solve The following scores are from a 4 × 10-yard shuttle-run test for a group of middle school students. The scores are measured in seconds to the nearest tenth of a second. Raw Data: 12.1 12.9 13.1 13.6 15.4 12.2 12.3 11.9 11.8 10.4 10.8 13.0 9.3 11.4 13.8 11.8 10.9 13.4 12.7 10.8 14.8 15.9 11.0 11.7 14.2 12.9 10.3 9.8 12.0 13.1 14.7 11.8 10.5 11.7 9.6 12.1 14.4 15.3 12.1 10.3 11.2 11.4 10.1 11.1 13.4 12.6 9.1 13.0 12.6 12.7 11.9 10.4 11.6 12.5 13.2 13.3 11.5 10.6 12.3 12.9 13.5 12.8 11.6 12.8 12.5 12.0 12.4 14.6 12.8 12.4 13.6 11.7 1. Determine the highest and lowest scores, and calculate the range. The lowest score is 9.1 and the highest score is 15.9. The range is 6.8. 2. Determine an appropriate interval size ( i ) for grouping data. Hint: Remember that you are working with data accurate to the nearest tenth of a second. i=6.8/15 = 0.45 and then you round up to 0.5. 3. Establish the groups and tally the number of scores per group. Develop a frequency column and a cumulative frequency column. Set the lower limit of the lowest group as a multiple of 0.5. What is N ? Check excel sheet for groups and tallys N=72 4. What are the real limits of group 12.0 to 12.4? The real limits of group 12.0 to 12.4 are 11.95-12.449. 5. Draw a histogram from the data. Check excel sheet. 6. Draw a frequency polygon from the data. Are the data normal or skewed? Check excel sheet for graph. The data is normal because it resembles a curve. 7. What is likely to happen to the frequency polygon if more cases are added to the data? If more cases are added to the data, the frequency polygon will smooth out. 8. Draw a cumulative frequency curve from the data. Check excel sheet. 2 From J. P. Weir and W. J. Vincent, Statistics in Kinesiology Web Study Guide, 5th ed. (Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 2021).
