Biblical Integration 2 Biblical Integration The issue being addressed at Hartford Technical College is communication, or the lack thereof, among staff members and between faculty and students. This has been an issue at the college for several years but has increasingly become worse. The problem is exacerbated because there are five campuses of the college and two instructional sites separated across multiple counties in the state. The senior staff of the college is also located in an administration building detached from all campuses. This means that decisions made in one location may not be relayed to all divisions. To focus on the difficulties in communication from a biblical angle, the parties involved need to understand the power of speech in the Bible. The Scriptures convey a great deal of information about the power of communication. Ephesians 4:29 states “Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them” ( New Living Translation , 1996). These words can be useful at Hartford, as they would help with employee morale and be used to help the spread of information both within and among departments. The above quote from Ephesians is also relevant when applied to the communication problem between faculty and students. Students frequently complain that they do not receive feedback from instructors on assignments until after the official date to withdraw from a class without academic or financial penalty. If instructors would apply this quote to their lessons and communicate properly with the students by grading assignments within a reasonable time and providing encouraging comments, the students would have a much greater chance of success.
Biblical Integration 3 Both the staff of the college and its students have become very frustrated with their respective parties for feeling excluded from the process. For staff members, many feel that they have been left out of decision-making by members of the upper administration. On the other hand, those in administrative positions feel as if they are being attacked by staff members’ responses when decisions are put into place. For students and faculty, there is also a difficult situation. Many faculty members teach six classes, with a total of 200 students, and extremely time-consuming assignments. Therefore, having to grading those assignments cannot be completed the next day. Students do not necessarily understand this and begin emailing instructors hours after their work is submitted, further adding to the instructors’ workload, as they have to reply to emails. All these factors combine and lead to frustration on all fronts at Hartford Technical College regarding communication, and individuals have had reactions in anger that were later regretted. It would be important to remember a lesson from James 1:19. “You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry” because as Proverbs 12:18 warns “Some people make cutting remarks” ( New Living Translation , 1996). If members of the organization at Hartford Technical College would take the notions of scripture into account, the institution would be more successful and harmonious. As stated in Proverbs 12:25 “Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up” ( New Living Translation , 1996). If staff members of the college would encourage each other rather than disagree or attempt to sabotage decisions, Hartford would provide a better atmosphere for current and future students. Faculty members would also be motivated to inspire students with feedback if they did not feel as if they were being left out of all processes at the institution. Conclusion
