PSY 355 Module Three Activity Template In-group Favoritism . Some groups intentionally inflate their members' accomplishments so they can feel better about themselves (Kaufman, 2019). prejudice based on race, gender, nationality, or religion. This prejudice is only the beginning. When I consider group prejudice, several incidents from my time in high school immediately come to mind. It was a clicky time in high school six years ago. Certain individuals socialized apart from anyone else. In high school, I often shared a meal in the band room with my fellow musicians. Our relationship with the athletic community was over. The cool and imaginative kids were kept apart. Acceptance Discrimination comes in many forms at my high school. You couldn't just show up and expect to be accepted by the group. The band or the jocks had to pick a side, but not both. Being in the band and having spent the summer together at band camp made it appear as though it would be simple to hang out with them once school started. Only my bandmates and the new kids really changed my social life. Conform I find it challenging to conform to other people's expectations. For me, it would have been preferable to make friends outside of the band and keep in touch with them throughout high school. Because of the negative connotation associated with the "Jocks," we avoided as much contact with them as possible. We avoided them by purposefully skipping lunch together. We made an effort to avoid them whenever possible in class. The most important tactic was to stay with the company for as little a time as possible. Social Categorization . The term "stereotype" is used to describe a type of social categorization. They are easy targets because of the widespread use of stereotypes in the high school setting. The effects of stereotyping can be both beneficial and harmful. Unfortunately, all the stereotypes I've ever experienced have been negative. The ability to classify people into groups based on shared traits is the only positive aspect of social categorization. Stereotypical Assumptions I believe our point of view can be gauged by our preconceived notions. My children is of mixed race, and I am dating an mixed race. I've run into stereotypes quite a few times in my life. After the murder of George Floyd galvanized the country behind the Black Lives Matter movement. There were many stereotypes floating around about law enforcement. In my opinion, not all law enforcement personnel are created equal. Officers who break the law should face consequences. The actions of one worker shouldn't reflect poorly on the rest of the team. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity . One of social identity theory's many benefits is that it provides a practical methodology for studying individual behavior. The possibility that this theory can shed light on human behavior is still another advantage. It's encouraging that greater diversity and tolerance are making their way 2
