Physics 107 Worksheet 2 Motion of a Toy Train A Thomas Train is released along a meter stick and a piece of tape is placed along the train every 2 seconds, showing the position of the train at that point. Time (s) Position (cm) Velocity (cm/s) Acceleration (cm/s 2 ) 0 0 2 5 2.5 4 10 2.5 0 6 15 2.5 0 8 20 2.5 0 10 25 2.5 0 12 30 2.5 0 14 35 2.5 0 16 40 2.5 0 18 45 2.5 0 20 50 2.5 0 22 55 2.5 0 24 60 2.5 0 26 65 2.5 0 28 70 2.5 0 30 75 2.5 0 32 80 2.5 34 85 means “ change in ”, so ∆ x means change in x. ∆ x = x f x i ; ∆t = t f t i ;∆v = v f v i
Example : v = ∆ x ∆t = x f x i t f t i = x 8 s x 6 s t 8 s t 6 s = 20 cm 15 cm 8 s 6 s = 5 cm 2 s = 2.5 cm s (This would actually be the velocity at 7 seconds). a = ∆v ∆t Take a Thomas Train and place it along a two-meter stick starting at 0 meters. Allow the train to move along the two-meter stick and place a tape down every two seconds to mark the position of the train. Fill out the table below. Time (s) Position (cm) Velocity (cm/s) Acceleration (cm/s 2 ) 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 32 34 1) Calculate the average speed of the car for the entire trip of your data set. (Show your work; average speed = total distance traveled / total time.) 2) Calculate the average speed of the car for several smaller time intervals. Compare you results with the average speed for the entire trip and comment on any differences. 3) Using your results from question 2 what can you say that the instantaneous velocity of the car is at, say, 2 seconds and 5 seconds?
4) Using Excel software create a graph of position versus time and speed versus time for your car. (We will put this off until I can write up directions for the new Excel) a. Calculate the slope of your position versus time graph and interpret what the slope means by thinking about the units the slope has. b. Comment on the value of the slope and compare the value to the results of your calculations in part 2 above. 5. Using words and numbers write a short paragraph describing the motion of the toy car that you would have observed. Motion of billiard ball on a ramp A billiard ball is released down a ramp and a piece of tape is placed on the ramp showing the ball’s position every 2 seconds.
