It is hazardous for a medical assistant to call in a prescription without a doctor's permission because it is against the law. In addition to her future as a medical assistant, Stephanie's decisions impact the patient, nurse practitioner, medical director, and primary care practice. Given that Stephanie lacks the authority to write prescriptions, it's probable that she gave the patient the wrong prescription for an allergy, confused it with their regular regimen, or gave them a medicine that would have harmful long- term repercussions. The wrong medication was prescribed to Mrs. Smith since amoxicillin does not suppress the cough. Furthermore, Stephanie should never have called in a patient's prescription without first consulting a physician and obtaining their clearance, as she is not allowed to dispense medication. Stephanie's activities impact the medical director because they compel an inquiry into the occurrence, and the director has an ethical and legal obligation to notify law enforcement of the findings, especially if there are any more irregularities involving controlled medications. Finally, Stephanie's activities generally affect clinical practice since they damage the clinic's reputation and may cause the public to view the practice unfavorably, reducing profitability. Reporting the occurrence to the relevant authorities is morally and legally required. Stephanie, the medical director, and I, the nurse practitioner, should meet to talk about the situation. Mrs. Smith should also know that her doctor had not approved the medication. To prevent such conduct, I would train every medical assistant in the office to define and explain their tasks clearly. In practice, I would establish a policy that makes it crystal clear that prescription medications cannot be called in without a physician's signature. The recently implemented provider signature attests that the prescription has been verified accurately and can be called into the pharmacy. Lastly, I would discuss the benefits of electronically prescribing medications with my coworkers and the medical director, stressing the requirement that all pharmaceutical prescriptions come from licensed prescribers. Improved patient safety is the main advantage of electronic prescribing, according to Oktarlina and Rasmi Zakiah. However, this practice's main challenges and issues are associated with its cost and the ability of healthcare facilities and allied healthcare professionals to adapt to it (Oktarlina, Rasmi Zakiah, 2020). I would use my leadership skills inside the primary care practice to bring about a positive change. Initially, I would discuss cordially with Stephanie and determine if she had genuinely called in the prescription. Stephanie may have left a note stating that Mrs. Smith needed cough medication, and another medical assistant may have taken the initiative to call in the medicine even though Mrs. Smith claimed to have talked with Stephanie. Even though Stephanie was the only one with the evidence, if she denied calling in the drug, I would follow up with the pharmacy to find out who did so. I've worked as a nurse in the past, so I know that pharmacists always want to know who called in the prescription, and that information is kept on file for future use. Based on research and data analysis, Twombly et al. claim that there is a need for more primary care physicians in the United States. Physician assistants (PAs) are essential to healthcare provision; nevertheless, during the last 15 years, the percentage of PAs employed in primary care has drastically decreased. Before making big decisions, like letting Stephanie leave, I would try to understand the incident with her because a good leader should always hear the complete story and do a fact check. Maintaining excellent working relationships and the efficacy and quality of patient treatment depends on good leadership. Additionally, it promotes a highly productive, supportive, and cooperative workforce (Bolin, 2019). If I accused Stephanie unjustly or embarrassed her in front of other staff members, it may cause tension in the clinic and affect how the practice operates. Not only would Stephanie be upset with me, but I would
lose the respect of my fellow medical assistants due to my inadequate communication skills and negligent problem-solving. References: Bolin, J. D. (2019).
