1. What are the different types of phonics instruction? (list them) Synthetic Phonics Analogy Phonics Analytic Phonics Embedded Phonics 2. Explain each of the different types of phonics instruction. In synthetic phonics approaches, students are taught to connect an individual letter or combination with its correct sound and then blend the sounds to form words. In analytic phonics, students are first taught whole word units followed by systematic instruction bridging the specific letters in the word with their corresponding sounds. Systematic instruction ensures that letter to sound relationships is taught in a specific order for cumulative practice. Analogy phonics teaches students unfamiliar words by comparison to known words like, recognizing that the rime segment of an unfamiliar word is identical to that of a familiar word, and then blending the known rime with the new word onset. Embedded phonics teaches students' phonics skills by embedding phonics instruction in text reading, a more implicit approach that relies to some extent on incidental learning. Explicit instruction provides teachers with accurate directions for teaching letter sound relationships. 3. What is the difference between part-to-whole phonics approach and whole-to-part phonics approach? Part-to-whole strategies involve starting with the smallest part of something and building up to teaching words. Whole to part phonics, builds on the spoken language children already understand rather than on letter-sound correspondences they don't yet understand.
4. How are single sounds known as? Phonemes 6. What are high frequency words? The words most frequently used in written text. 7. What is the difference between high frequency words and sight words? High-frequency words are the most commonly occurring words in print. Sight words are recognized "at first sight". Any word can become a sight word once a student can read it instantly. 8. What is phonics? Why it is important in teaching children how to read? Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language. 9. Describe the connection between phonemic awareness and learning to read. The first step to reading is creating a strong relationship between sounds in words. Sounds make words, words then come together to form sentences and so on. The stronger a student's phonological and phonemic awareness is the better chance they have of being a successful reader. The same in retrospect, if a student shows strong signs of struggling in sounds to word relationships, we can assume they will have difficulty reading. 10.What type of phonics is best to teaching reading? Why? Explain. The best way to teach phonics is through a systematic and explicit approach. The idea being that letters represent sounds of spoken language. There is an organized relationship between those
