Nicole Holcombe February 4, 2024 Milestone Two Context: One major trend that led to the American Civil War was the secession of the Confederate States of America in order to protect themselves and their economic interests. 1 Abraham Lincoln, who was known to believe in economic equality for free black men 2 was elected president. In the face of Abraham Lincoln's election, despite his promise to not interfere with slavery where it already existed, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas formed the Confederate States of America and seceded from the Union. This left Lincoln with the choice of either using force and starting a war, or allowing a "foreign power" to maintain a fort within its territory. 3 Despite the Lincoln's attempt at a peaceful resolution, the Confederacy took the aggressive route and attacked Fort Sumter. Another major trend that influenced the American Civil War was the growing support for emancipation. By the fall of 1862 the idea of emancipation as a goal for the war had gained widespread support. 4 There were benefits and drawbacks involved in declaring emancipation as an aim for the war. On one hand this could reduce the ability of the Confederacy to be recognized internationally which would also limit their ability to trade with foreign powers. This was a major issue for the confederacy because the availability of goods was low and cost was high in the south according 1 1.Nancy A. Hewitt and Steven F. After several severe losses, Lincoln and the cabinet made the final decision and declared emancipation as the goal for the war. 6 The secession of the Confederate States of America directly resulted in the aggressive attack on Fort Sumter which started the American Civil war. The secession stemmed directly from fears of abolition and emancipation which was eventually declared as an aim for the American Civil War. The Confederate States of America feared abolition and emancipation due to their reliance on slave labor. The economy of the Southern United States depended heavily on slaves and as such the southern states felt they were in danger of losing everything. Many southern individuals felt very strongly that they were on the right side and that they were honoring their country such as Landers. 7 Lincoln's attempt at peaceful resolution of the issues failed and the Confederate States of America attacked Fort Sumter marking the beginning of the war. As the war raged on, the support for emancipation grew, and after much deliberation Lincoln made his Emancipation Proclamation which declared all slaves in areas still in rebellion "forever free". Emancipation became an official aim of the American Civil War. Thesis Statement: The secession of the Confederate States of America directly caused the Emancipation Proclamation, as evidenced by The aggressive attack on Fort Sumter which began the war, the 5 5.G.
