Activity:
Dictators and Civil Wars - The Cold War in Latin America
Background:
The Cold War was an ideological, and sometimes military, struggle between the United States
and the Soviet Union. In general, the Soviet Union supported the expansion of communist governments around
the globe, and the United States supported anti-communist regimes, including both democracies and
dictatorships. By the 1950s, these tensions were seen in Latin America, and revolutions, coups, and uprisings
became commonplace throughout most of the latter half of the twentieth century.
Objective:
Explore the interactive map, including images, videos, and outside resources, to examine the
extent of Cold War tensions and upheaval in Latin America.
View the film
Dictators and Civil Wars: The Cold War in Latin America
and answer the following
questions.
Why was the Cuban Revolution in
1959 seen as a turning point in
U.S.-Latin American relations?
It focused on the dangers of the soviet union's ideological expansion
so close to home.
According to those interviewed in the
film, what made the events in
Nicaragua and El Salvador different
and important when it came to U.S.
foreign policy?
Military and economic aid poured into the and so did American
military advisors. Political violence was also at a high. El Salvador
had the strategy of massacre to fight this war.
Across the western hemisphere,
provide at least three examples of
actions taken by the United States to
prevent the spread of communism.
The crisis we see on the border with immigration, helping aid El
Salvador with their cold war, and finally sending aid to southern
America.
According to those interviewed in the
film, what is the lasting legacy of U.S.
intervention in Cold War era
we are gonna be affected by the choices that the government made
back then for years to come.
After viewing the film, what is your
initial impression of the Cold War
in Latin America? How do you view
U.S. involvement in the region?
I don't think that the United States should have gotten involved
because then we should have half of the problems we have today.
Explore the
Cold War in Latin America Interactive Map
. Use the resources on the map to answer the
questions below.
Please note that the map includes a Legend (globe icon below the title) and a glossary (paper/quill icon).
Without clicking on any of the
events/tags, what is your first
impression of the map? What do you
notice? What questions immediately
come to mind?
It surprised me just how much of South America was having these
problems and were involved. I question how the Dominican republic
was involved because I have not really heard much about them.

Examine the two events listed from
the 1950s. One occurs in Guatemala
and other in Cuba. Compare and
contrast these two events. How are
they similar and different?
In Guatemala, A C.I.A.-backed military coup overthrew the
democratically elected president, Jacobo Árbenz. The coup was
aided in part by the U.S.-based United Fruit Company after Árbenz
proposed land reforms, which raised fears about communist
ideology. In Cuba, Fidel Castro and his allies completed an armed
revolt and takeover of Cuba from the military dictatorship of
Fulgencio Batista. Batista had been backed by the U.S. military.
Examine the events from the 1960s.
Be sure to explore the additional
source/link that is provided.
Summarize one event you found
particularly important or
interesting. Why did you choose it
and what did you learn?
The Bay of pigs invasion from April 17-20 1961,This failed covert
operation of Cuban exiles was supported by the CIA and the U.S.
government. Inspired in part by the 1954 covert operation in
Guatemala, the goal was to invade Cuba and remove Castro from
power. This overthrow attempt prompted Castro to turn to the Soviet
Union for aid.
By clicking on the video camera icon,
choose one of the short films from the
map to watch.
Summarize the events of the film and
explain how it fits into the context of
the Cold War in Latin America. (How it
relates to the other events and
characteristics of the Cold War we
have learned about)
It won’t let me watch any of the videos for the short films.
Choose one event with a photo from the 1950s or 1960s you find interesting. Take a close look at the
elements of the image and answer the questions below.
Which photo did you choose?
Describe what you see. What do you
notice first? What details stand out to
you about this photo?
What do you think is happening in
this image? What can you learn
from examining this photo?
What do you wonder about?
What questions does this
image make you think of?
I chose the Ecuadorian Coup de tat,
In the photo I see men trying to flip a
car over in the street.
I think the people in the image are
rioting against the elections that
are going on.
The riots that were going on for
black lives matter.
