HOMEWORK 4 Make sure to upload onto Canvas both your completed Homework document in Word/PDF format and Tableau Packaged Workbook in TWBX format (see the screenshot below). First, download the Earthquake Data (1973-2012) from Canvas. This data-set contains information on the magnitude of earthquakes in Richter scale around the globe over the duration of 1973 through 2012. Next, connect this data-set to Tableau Desktop and answer the following questions, taking into consideration what you learned from the class. Make sure to upload onto Canvas both your completed Homework document and Tableau worksheet . 1. ( Total 12 Points ) (a) Identify the total number of earthquakes (i.e., observations) recorded in this dataset. Note that each row in the dataset represents an earthquake. ( 2 Points ) 330748. (b) Use Tableau’s filtering tab to Identify the number of earthquakes with a magnitude equal to or greater than 7 on the Richter scale . ( 4 Points ) 612. (c) Create a bar chart to identify the top 3 areas of the world experiencing the highest number of earthquakes. How many earthquakes were recorded for each of these 3 areas? ( 6 Points ) 1. Fiji region: 9,101. 2. Kuril Islands: 7,864. 3. Vanuatu: 7,024. [Hint: you need to use the variables “ Earthquake_Data (Count) ”, “ Area of the World ”, and Magnitude Richter ” in your visualizations.] 1 MS3003 Visualization in Business – Dr. Amir Karimi ( a.karimi@utsa.edu )
2. ( Total 13 Points ) Use the Earthquake Data (1973-2012) from the previous question to answer the following questions: (a) Recreate the following density map displaying the regional distribution of earthquake severity around the globe. Darker areas are associated with larger earthquakes in Richter scale. ( 7 Points ) (b) What insights do you obtain from the density map you created in part a? Explain. ( 6 Points ) The map describes the severity of earthquakes around the world from 1973 to 2012. Asia emerged as the epicenter of catastrophic earthquakes during this period, experiencing a substantial concentration of severe tremors. Following closely, the Australia and Oceania region faced a notable frequency of devastating earthquakes. In Central America and South America, although seismic activity was evident, the intensity and severity of quake tremors were relatively less pronounced. Europe and the Middle East also grappled with a significant number of earthquakes, yet the level of devastation was not as severe when compared to the catastrophic occurrences in Asia and the Oceania region. This geographical variance in earthquake severity underscores the diverse and dynamic nature of seismic hazards across the world during those four decades. [Hint: you need to use the variables “ Longitude ”, “ Latitude ”, and “ Magnitude Richter ” in your visualization.] 2 MS3003 Visualization in Business – Dr. Amir Karimi ( a.karimi@utsa.edu )
[Hint: To achieve a more precise replication, you can set the color intensity and color opacity as 80% and 100%, respectively.] 3. ( Total 13 Points ) First, download the Presidential Elections 2020 Data from Canvas. This data-set contains information on the US presidential voter turnout in 2020. Next, connect this data-set to Tableau Desktop and answer the following questions, taking into consideration what you learned from the class. (a) Recreate the following symbol map displaying the total number of eligible voters across the US. ( 7 Points ) 3 MS3003 Visualization in Business – Dr. Amir Karimi ( a.karimi@utsa.edu )
