WEEK 4 WRITING NOTEBOOK

Each week, you will have an opportunity to practice different aspects of the writing process in a
writing notebook. It consists of a template you will fill out and submit in Canvas. In addition to
introducing and practicing targeted components of the writing process, these notebooks are
meant to help you to determine your own strengths and to identify opportunities for growth.
This week, the writing notebook focuses on cultural competence in the workplace and
how it reconnects to your communication to ensure that you choose the best rhetorical
style for your purpose and target audience.
STEP ONE: Cultural Competence and its Importance
Cultural competence is an individual’s ability to interact with and respect other people who are
culturally different in a cross-cultural setting. Review the
Cultural Competence Resource
resource.
1.
Based on the definition of cultural competence, explain why it is important to be culturally
competent as an employee in your field?
Cultural competency is important in the medical field to be able to empathize with
patients, communicate with others regardless of our backgrounds, and work well with
others as a team. By practicing cultural competence in my field of choice, it will produce
better patient outcomes, communication, build trust, and create a more healthy
environment for patients and peers to be in.
STEP TWO: Cultural Competence as a Workplace Skill
The workplace is a diverse setting, as employees come from various backgrounds and present
varying perspectives. Thus, it is important to adapt to, respect, tolerate, and understand unique
individuals to effectively collaborate and communicate with different people from different
backgrounds.
1.
Discuss two strategies you can use to ensure respect and tolerance for diverse
individuals who are different from yourself in the workplace.

2
Two strategies that would be beneficial for me in the medical field are developing my
communication skills and practicing my listening skills. Communication skills are vital
in patient care because a misunderstanding could be a lethal mistake and could
ultimately end up with not only a loss of a patient, but loss of job or legal implications.
Listening skills are also crucial in the medical field to fully be able to understand and
empathize with the patient. It also is important to use both communication and
listening skills with my coworkers as well to ensure safety for myself, peers, and
patients.
STEP THREE: Cultural Competence in Workplace Communication
Now, you can combine the work you have done so far to illustrate how cultural competency
skills help influence the rhetorical style used in workplace writing. Communication is a two-way
process that requires building a rapport with individuals from different cultures, avoiding
assumptions, and communicating the intended message concisely and clearly using verbal and
non-verbal language.
Activity 1
:
Review the
Non-Verbal Communication Across Cultures
.
1.
Analyze two non-verbal communication strategies, such as tone of voice, facial
expressions, personal space, words, and posture, that enhance professionalism and
teamwork in a cross-cultural setting.
Eye contact and facial expressions are two nonverbal communication strategies that can
enhance professionalism and teamwork in a cross-cultural setting. Maintaining eye
contact with an individual that is speaking is a sign of respect in most cultures, but in
some cultures, it can be seen as confrontational. Facial expressions convey many
emotions and attitudes and often we may be unaware of them. It is important to be
mindful of our facial expressions to ensure we are coming off respectful, friendly, and
responding appropriately. It is also important to be aware of the audience and cultural
differences to ensure we are being respectful to their cultures as well because what may
be seen as respectful in one culture could be rude in another.
2.
Analyze two written communication strategies that enhance professionalism and
emphasize the intended message in a cross-cultural setting.
In written communication, providing visual aids and reading your writing out loud are
important to enhance professionalism and emphasize the intended message in a cross-
cultural setting. Providing visual aids can help overcome potential language barriers
and help the reader better understand the information provided. By reading your
written communication out loud, you can ensure the message you are conveying is
easily understood and can mitigate the chance of the tone being misinterpreted.
