151-3 Introductory Biology - Discussion Homework 8 Week of October 31, 2022 Name: Katie Scheer Reminder: Submit your homework on Canvas by the start of your scheduled discussion section! Please use a different font color so that your answers stand out. 1. What is the purpose of mitosis? To produce genetically identical cells. 2. Haplopappus is an annual flowering plant that grows in deserts. It is of interest because its 2n number is only four. Cells in the vegetative parts of the plant are not undergoing mitosis and are permanently in G1 of the cell cycle; a. How many DNA double helices do these vegetative cells have in their nucleus? There would be 4 DNA double helices or 4 total chromosomes in cells not undergoing division. 4 b. During metaphase of mitosis, how many DNA double helices would there be in the cell? During metaphase, there would be 8 DNA double helices on the mitotic spindle at the center of the cell. DNA would have duplicated in the S phase of interphase prior to division. 16 3. a. Define chromatids and homologous chromosomes. Don’t just copy the definitions from your textbook, lecture, or online source. Define both terms in your own words in a way that makes sense to you. Chromatids are produced from DNA replication (meaning they are identical copies), whereas homologous chromosomes are in sexual reproduction and are not identical. b. Sketch sister chromatids of a replicated chromosome below and explain how chromatids and chromosomes are related. sister chromatids are still attached at the centromere, it’s still one chromosome 4. Define “gene” and “allele” and explain how they are related. Gene is a portion of DNA that determines a certain trait, and an allele is a specific form of a gene. Alleles are responsible for the variations in a gene which a given trait can be expressed. 5. What does the 2 in “2n” signify when talking about ploidy? 2 of what? The 2 stands for pairs of homologue 6. What is the purpose of meiosis? To produce four genetically different haploid cells (from diploid) 7. In what types of organisms does meiosis occur? Eukaryotes 8. In what types of cells does meiosis occur? Sperm and egg cells 9. Consider a single diploid cell about to go through meiosis. It has 6 centromeres. a. How many chromosomes does this cell have, and how many pairs of homologous chromosomes? 6 chromosomes, 6 homologous chromosomes b. How many cells are produced at the end of meiosis?
4 haploid daughter cells c. How many chromosomes, and which chromosomes, does each of the daughter cells contain at the end of meiosis? ½ the number of the parents cell, and one of each pair 10. You have a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) with a characteristic that is controlled by one gene. This fly is diploid. a. In a somatic cell (i.e., a non-gamete cell) of this fly, how many chromosomes will carry this gene? 8 b. How are the chromosomes with this gene related to one another? Chromosomes contain genes. In other words, genes are found on chromosomes. c. Must the gene DNA be identical on all the chromosomes that carry it? Explain. No, sometimes there are slight variations of genes called alleles.
