Annotated Bibliography Nova Southeastern University COMP 2000: Advanced College Writing
Annotated Bibliography The topic I chose is social media and how social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, TikTok) influence the movie choices of viewers through reviews, recommendations, and discussions. For this topic, the community I will be observing is the movie lover club which is made up of me and my group of friends that love watching movies. I aim to address various factors such as social sharing of trailers and clips, algorithmic recommendations, influencer recommendations and many more. The amount of influence that social media has on our day to day lives is tremendous and highly overlooked. When social media starts to become a part of our daily routine it can often mask its influence on our daily lives. Recognizing and understanding these influences is crucial for both consumers and industry stakeholders alike, as they move through the digital media consumption environment.
Chauhan, R., Connelly, S., Howe, D., Soderberg, A. T., & Crisostomo, M. E. (2022). The danger of “fake news”: How using social media for information dissemination can inhibit the ethical decision making process. Ethics & Behavior , 32(4), 287–306. https://doi.org/10.1080/10508422.2021.1890598 This scholarly article contains a study that was done to examine how much of an effect different social media platforms have on an individual's decision-making. The study was done across 190 undergraduates who were recruited from a large midwestern university. They recorded each participant's choices (after they used a social media site for about 1-3 hours) on an ethical issue in a social media discussion format, the same ethical issue in an online news article format, and, a comparison when presented with both formats. After the study, it was shown that the majority of the participants tended to make much better/ethical decisions when using the news article format rather than when they were on a social media platform. The results produced by this study prove that when we make decisions while basing it off of a social media website we tend to make it more basic and simpler. The findings show that the utilization of social media has a notable impact on various aspects of ethical cognition, including perceptions of social consensus, recognition of ethical dilemmas, and the process of ethical sensemaking. Overall this study brings to light the fact that social media, when employed as a medium for information dissemination, tends to impede rather than facilitate the decision-making processes. This study was published three years ago and it seems to have been updated last two years ago. This will be of great importance when I do my research since this information is
recent and it helps answer a good chunk of my questions. The information in this is definitely related to my topic since it helps support the research in many ways. The intended audience for this is social media users and the information provided is up to par. The authors for this are professors who work at universities and their contact is provided. The information comes from a study done by several professors and the information is supported by evidence. The information provided is to inform people of the effects of social media on decision-making. Overall this is a really good source for my research. After reading this article I gained a better understanding of the implications that social media poses to an individual's decision-making process. This study will help provide invaluable insight into the challenges posed by social media. Yakar, Betul. (2021). The influence of social media over the decision-making process. John Marshall Law Journal , 14(2), 36-56. https://heinonlineorg.ezproxylocal.library.nova.edu/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/ jmlwj14&id=182&collection=journals&index= This scholarly article focuses more on how social media platforms influence public opinion. This study was conducted as a result of mass public misinformation which can cause legal decisions to deviate from their normal course. It goes in-depth on how the rapid dissemination of information through social media raises concerns about the reliability of news sources. This study addresses key questions such as: How can accurate information be effectively shared to counteract misinformation? What solutions exist for correcting manipulated information spread on social media? Can the negative effects of misinformation from popular
