1 Event Synthesis Nancy Rizzo Brady University of Phoenix DOC 714S: Symposium I J. Medgar Roberts Ed. D/E. T. December 18, 2023
2 Event Synthesis In recent decades, approaches to critical thinking have generally taken a practical turn, pivoting away from more abstract accounts – such as emphasizing the logical relations that hold between statements ( Ennis, 1964 ) – and moving toward an emphasis on belief and action. According to the definition that   Robert Ennis (2018)   has been advocating for the last few decades, critical thinking is ‘reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do’ (p. 166). Numerous contemporary theorists posit a similar view in which critical thinking guides belief and action ( Brookfield, 1987 ;   Kuhn, 2015 ;   Paul and Elder, 2006 ;   Scriven and Paul, 1987 ), prompting   Ennis (2018)   to call this collection of views ‘the mainstream concept of critical thinking’ (p. 166). Although the mainstream conception has been successful in providing an account of how thinkers can resolve states of doubt to guide belief and action, a theory of critical thinking must do more. It must also help thinkers   arouse   states of doubt to question belief and action. In this way, thinkers have the tools not only to solve problems but also to reveal new problems (Southworth, 2022). Critical thinking is a crucial part to being able to change a person’s perspective. A person needs to be able to take a step back and be reasonable and reflective. You need to be able to self-reflect to make real changes. This is a crucial part of being able to work within a diverse community. You must be able to relate to different people in different ways. The autobiographical lens I have dealt with a lot of situations in my career that have involved me having to adjust my perspective to related to the people involved or the situation as a whole. I am one of the rare schools in my area that hires male teachers. This has been an uphill battle in the field of early childhood education. When parents came in last year, they were not only
3 surprised but uncomfortable with the concept of them working with their children. I had to look at this from the perspective of their life experiences, bias, and sometimes just plain misinformation. I could not however negate what they were feeling based on my own perspectives. It was my job to listen gather data and give them tools to be able to understand how the men who work for me were qualified and went through all the same process as the women teachers. It was a long process and honestly it would have been easier to just close myself off from those conversations and only see my own perspective but that would not have been appropriate in trying to create a diverse community in which children can learn. The learners lens. In this situation looking at the situation through the learner’s lens was critical. In situations like the one stated about you must listen to not only what is being said but the why and how behind it. The perspective from t h parents end was certainly different than the one from mine. Meeting together in the middle to start a reflective conversation took both of us looking at it from each person’s perspective. I could not just focus on my own life experiences nor could they. If we did the conversation would have simply ended with no resolution. Colleagues’ experiences Colleagues’ experiences were certainly helpful in this conversation. Teachers who could validate and express the same views or values of working in a diverse community helped the family to get a clearer view of the why and how we did things. Having that
