HIWD 370 S HORT E SSAY : W ORLDVIEW Bonita L. Martin January 22, 2024 After throughly reading Duiker & Spielvogel's work, I have come to realize that there is a large impact of Darwinian perspective on peoples everyday lives, and how we perceive the world around us. It is not easily noticeable, but yet profound. From my understanding historians such as Duiker and Spielvogel accept that the evolutionary process to studying history in the secular world is all about making societies better. Making societies better such as studying them carefully and researching them to enhance our understanding. This would be to examine how their progress has developed over a period of time. (Duiker & Spielvogel, 2017.). 1 This idea basically speaks on the civilizations progress because they have to adjust to their environment, figure out new and better ways to do things, as well as change how they interact with each other. It's similar to survival of the fittest but for societies instead of animals. The ancient Mesopotamian farmers were known for their remarkable resourcefulness, which played a crucan important role in their survival and manuever to the challenges of their time. Also, the political organization of the Sumerian city-states was not just a historical event, but a turning point in the human journey. These small victories mark the evolution of human society. People have always been driven to survive and thrive in their surroundings, molding themselves to the world around them. (Coulborn 1969) 2 The way we deal with current issues can be impacted by Darwin's theory. For instance, when it comes to tackling climate change, a society that believes in evolution is more likely to value scientific research and innovation. It is known that our ability to acclimate is essential for survival. On one hand there are different perspectives to consider, there is a scientific perspective that explains historical events through natural causes and phenomena. On the other hand, there is a creationist perspective that sees historical events as being guided by divine intervention. This is described in religious texts such as the Liberty University Doctrinal Statement. 3 Both perspectives offer interesting insights and can contribute to a specific understanding. Many people believe that the belief in one god or the moral lessons taught by old religions are part of a story created by a higher power. This way of thinking can (and has) have a big impact on everyday life by shaping our moral choices and rules, highlighting the importance of tradition and what is considered to be divine law. 1. HIWD 370 Evolution is the real deal according to science lovers. It's backed up by extensive evidence and is widely accepted in the scientific community. From biology to anthropology, evolutionary theory is used (and respected) in many fields. But there are those who think differently. They believe in creationism and find their truth in spiritual and moral realms. It's not something you can prove with science, but it's a framework that gives meaning and guides ethics. In my experience, the reality shown by these views can be seen in the classroom, where debates around the teaching of evolution versus creationism are proof of this clash of worldviews. The case of Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District (2005) 4 is a prime example of how these perspectives battle for legitimacy in the public education system. The way we view the world often affects how we interpret history and culture. This is evident in the physical structures and institutions that we create, such as monuments and museums. For example, some museums may present a historical account that acknowledges evolutionary theory, while others may align more with creationist beliefs. One notable example is the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., which offers exhibits that explain human origins from an evolutionary perspective, reflecting the influence of Darwinian theory on our understanding of history. In conclusion, the way society views history through either Darwin's theory or creationist views has a huge impact on our everyday lives. It affects the way we make policies, educate, find our cultural identity, and deal with other countries. The worldview we take on shapes our individual and societal lives. It's important to recognize how these worldviews influence our attitudes to the present and future. Acknowledging this impact is imperative for a respectful and all-inclusive conversation about our history. BIBLIOGRAPHY Liberty University. "Doctrinal Statement."
