Issues Facing Multicultural Education in Classrooms As the culture and diversity of the country continues to grow, classrooms are becoming more and more diverse. With this, teachers must adopt a multicultural education practice to teaching that aims to respect and foster appreciation for the many cultures in the classroom that also targets the reduction of prejudice and discrimination. Conventionally, students who come into a multicultural classroom come in at a disadvantage as a result of having to adjust to learning new practices, new people and their cultures, and unfamiliar languages. Uniting student achievement with the task of adjusting students to a multicultural classroom takes practice, strategized techniques, and continued education. As a result, teachers who are able to unite the two, will have better student achievement in the end. All things considered, it is evident that the relationship between culture and education is important since the culture of the classroom can affect the student educational process in the classroom. Key Historical Events in Multicultural Education The Context in K-12 Education Multicultural education is an approach that is aimed at fostering respect and appreciation for the many diverse cultures that are flooding the classrooms of the United States. There are many ways this can be implemented in K-12 education. It should be a proactive and progressive approach that aims to transform education on the grounds of educational equality and social justice. Understanding and mutual respect can be best achieved through education which consequently leads to teachers being very important agents and playing a very important role (Pilus & Nguyen, 2023). The drastic change in the educational landscape has also, subsequently, caused teachers to face hardships in teaching where teachers must prepare students to face a more diverse world. To do this, teachers must be able to identify and understand the complex dimensions of cultural diversity, in addition to, understanding how to effectively implement proper 2
multicultural education that not only changes the curriculum but unites multiculturalism among students (Pilus & Nguyen, 2023). The Current Views of Multicultural Education When it comes to education in America, multicultural education in the classroom is crucial with the growing number of students who speak a second language in the classroom, immigrated from somewhere else, or have a different culture. America is often referred to as the “melting pot ,” suggesting that diverse demographics are able to exist alongside one another with its varying and distinctive cultures, consequently enhancing humanity across America (Hight & Bowen, 2019). America’s educational system has always been centered around Eurocentrism ; however, which primarily cateres to the backgrounds of European Americans. Nevertheless, key stakeholders and educators are now exploring and implementing the idea of infusing the cultural history and worldviews of others into the curriculum which may help boost academics and make schooling more effective. A study was done on the African and mainstream culture on African American students in public elementary schools. The study showed that African American students who attended a school that infused African culture into the curriculum showed significantly higher scores in reading and math. This was in comparison to African American students who attended a school that did not infuse their culture into the curriculum. The inclusion of their culture offered by the multicultural education allowed students to attain self-esteem, self-worth, and self-identity which all attribute to higher academic achievement.
