Assignment 6-2 By: Brandon White CJ-340 Dr. Albert Southern New Hampshire University
Cultural views, values, and the people and environment we surround ourselves with significantly shape our behavior. The Cultural Deviance Theory emphasizes the critical role of culture in the way we perceive deviant behavior. However, it's essential to note that deviance may vary across different cultures and subcultures, such as gangs or religious groups. While certain actions like murder, rape, and robbery are generally considered unacceptable in most cultures, other behaviors such as smoking in public, possessing a firearm without proper permits, or dumping trash may be more acceptable in some cultures. For instance, smoking in public is more widely accepted in some countries, while strict laws govern the purchase and possession of firearms and illegal dumping in others. By understanding these cultural differences and their impact on behavior, we can better navigate and appreciate the complexities of our global society. Understanding the root causes of an individual's criminal behavior through established theories is crucial in shedding light on their motives and long-term patterns. By analyzing cultural factors that shape their behavior, we can modify their environment and potentially alter their life outcomes. However, it's important to note that theories alone cannot guarantee a crime- free life as there may be hidden reasons for their actions. Even a person with no criminal record living in a well-to-do neighborhood may commit a convenience store robbery. Therefore, while theories are helpful in comprehending such cases, they should not be the sole approach to a criminal investigation.
