By Israel Gollancz

Adon Olam

(A paraphrase for children.)

ETERNAL Lord, His praise I sing,

Who reigned before the world was wrought;

Creation’s voice acclaimed Him King,

Whose Word created all from nought.

And when all things shall pass away,

He will not pass, He still will reign,

Alone, unchang’d, of sov’reign sway,

He was, He is, He will remain.

Yea, He is One, no second dares

Compare with Him in wondrous might;

None owns His strength; His throne none shares;

Without beginning, infinite.

My God, my living Saviour He;

My Rock of Hope in sorrow’s hour;

I thirst—my cup He fills for me;

He is my Beacon and my Tower.

Whene’er I sleep, whene’er I wake,

With Him I leave my soul so dear:

His care may He my body make!

God guarding me, I have no fear.
