Fixed Air.
Carbonic dioxide gas. Dr. Black gave it this name, because carbonate of magnesia evolved by heat carbonic acid, that is, MgO, CO2 evolved CO2, thereby proving that CO2 (carbonic acid) is a “fixed air.”
