The twelve chief Roman deities—   1
   Jupiter, Apollo, Mars, Neptune, Mercury, and Vulcan.   2
   Juno, Vesta, Minerva, Cers, Diana, and Venus.   3
   Ennius puts them into two hexameter verses:   4
       
“Juno, Vesta, Minerva, Ceres, Diana, Venus, Mars,
Mercurius, Jovi’, Neptunus, Vulcanus, Apollo.”
   Called “consentes,” says Varro,   5
        “Quia in consilium Jovis adhibebantur.”—De Lingua Latina, vii. 28.
