Care killed the Cat.Carême (2 syl.).
E. Cobham Brewer 1810–1897. Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. 1898.
Care Sunday (the fifth Sunday in Lent).
Professor Skeat tells us (Notes and Queries, Oct. 28th, 1893), that “care” means trouble, suffering; and that Care-Sunday means Passion-Sunday. In Old High German we have Kar-woche and Kar-frtag.   1
The Latin cura sometimes meant “sorrow, grief, trouble,” as “Curam et angrem animi levre.”—Cicero: Att. i. 15.
