Gibbon, Edward
(b. Putney, April 27th, 1737; d. January 16th, 1794). “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” (1776–88); “Essais sur l’Etude de la Littérature” (1761); “Antiquities of the House of Brunswick,” and other miscellaneous works, published, with Memoir, in 1799, under the editorship of John, Lord Sheffield.
