which would fit any foot. Theramenes, one of the Athenian oligarchy, was nicknamed the trimmer (cothurnus, a sandal or boot which might be worn on either foot), because no dependence could be placed on him. He blew hot and cold with the same breath. The proverb is applied to a trimmer.
