? is &qustio;—that is, the first and last letters of quœstio (question).   1
   ! is &joy; Io in Latin is the interjection of joy.   2
   § is a Greek p (pi), the initial letter of paragraph.   3
   * is used by the Greek grammarians to arrest attention to something striking (asterisk or star).   4
   † is used by the Greek grammarians to indicate something objectionable (obelisk or dagger).   5
