QUOTATION: I return you many thanks for the honour you have done me; but Europe is not to be saved by any single man. England has saved herself by her exertions, and will, as I trust, save Europe by her example.
ATTRIBUTION: WILLIAM PITT, the younger, response to the Lord Mayor’s toast to Pitt’s health as the “Saviour of Europe,” Lord Mayor’s banquet, London, November 9, 1805.—Philip Henry Stanhope, Life of the Right Honourable William Pitt, vol. 4, p. 346 (1867, reprinted 1970).

This was Pitt’s last public utterance.
