axis (n.)
Use the borrowed foreign axes (pronounced AK-seez) for the plural, but never for the singular (pronounced AK-sis). At the lower Conversational levels, Standard speakers may rarely (and perhaps jocularly) use axises as the plural, but Standard English neither speaks nor writes it at the higher levels.
