AFFIX
is the generic name for an addition to the beginning, middle, or end of a word: a prefix precedes a base word: the prefix pre- + fix becomes prefix; an infix fits into the middle of a base word, as in Latin the infix -ab- added to amo gives us amabo; a suffix follows a base word, as when the suffix -ence attached to the verb differ yields difference.
