Thruway is the Standard spelling of the word meaning “a high-speed, limited access, multiple-lane highway.” It is a blend of through and highway. Throughway is a variant. Also called an expressway (the British call it a motorway), a thruway that is part of the federal system is often called an interstate or a freeway. A parkway is a specially landscaped divided highway limited to passenger cars.  1
