hyper-, hypo- (prefixes)
 
 
Hyper- means “above, beyond, too far,” and the like, as in hyperacid, hyperbolic, hypertension, hyperthyroid, and hypercritical. Hypo- means “under, beneath, less than, or subordinated to,” as in hypoallergenic, hypodermic, hypoglycemia, hypotaxis, and hypothyroid. These prefixes are usually joined to other words without use of hyphens.  1
