diphtheria, diphthong, naphtha, ophthalmology (nn.)

The Standard pronunciations of these four words are usually dif-THIR-ee-uh, DIF-thawng, ahf-thal-MAHL-uh-jee, and NAF-thuh. But many speakers of Standard English begin these words with the sounds dip-, dip-, ahp-, and nap-, respectively, and these speakers include physicians, phoneticians, eye doctors, and chemists. Widespread it may be, but some conservatives object to this Standard variant pronunciation. See -PHTH-.  1
