intend (v.)
combines with the preposition for as in His mother intended him for the church, as well as with a direct object plus to plus infinitive, as in She intends her daughter to become a doctor, or to plus infinitive alone, as in Neither child intends to obey her. It can also be followed by a clause with or without that: They intended [that] everyone would stay for dinner. See also DESIGN; MEAN FOR.
